Today is Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day.

April 9th is a day to honor the American servicemen and women that have experienced unimaginable trials and profound cruelty as prisoners of war.

April 9th is a significant date, because, on this date in 1942, the Bataan Death March began. This event was the forcible transfer, (later classified as a war crime), by the Imperial Japanese Army of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war over sixty miles on foot, where they endured beatings, torture, and little food and water. Thousands of these POW’s died.

Former prisoners of war have withstood days, months, and sometimes years of imprisonment, missing irreplaceable milestones and simple moments at home. But they were never forgotten; they were remembered every day by loved ones.
As we reflect on the sacrifices that have made progress throughout our world possible, we are reminded of our solemn duty to serve our former prisoners of war, their families, and all our veterans as well as they served us.

This day is different than the National POW/MIA Recognition Day (observed the 3rd Friday of September) as today we Honor individuals who were POWs for their service and sacrifice.

April 9th is designated by Congress as the Presidentially proclaimed observance of National Former POW Recognition Day, a day to honor...

Today we recognize Gold Star Spouses.

A Gold Star Spouse is any surviving spouse of any person of the United States military who died while a member of the armed forces of our country, or who died subsequent to such service as a result of an injury or disability incurred during such service.

If you or know someone who is a Gold Star Spouse, we see you. If you are not in receipt of the VA survivor benefit, reach out to your local VSO to see if you qualify. In Mesa County, please email [email protected] or call 970-248-2733.

If you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member who died in the line of duty, or the survivor of a Veteran who died from a service-related injury or illness, you may be able to get a tax-free monetary benefit called VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC). Find out if y...

MST, or Military Sexual Trauma, has continued to be a problem for all branches of the military. For the women and men who have lived this sort of trauma: We see you. We also want to help.

Please reach out to the VA Mental Health Dept or the Vet Center for counseling, but also talk to a VSO to discuss making a claim. We will talk through what it looks like and will be there the entire time with you. It is not easy, but also not an impossible task to overcome.
