🚒 Residential Structure Fire – June 5, 2026 🚒

On June 5, 2026, the Grand Island Fire Company was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 4:49 p.m.

First-arriving units reported heavy fire showing from an attached garage, with flames extending through the garage roof. Crews immediately deployed a 1¾-inch handline to attack the fire in the garage.

A second crew entered the residence to conduct a primary search and check for fire extension. Interior firefighters encountered challenging conditions and discovered fire in the attic space, which was brought under control utilizing the second handline. A third crew was sent to the roof to perform ventilation operations.

The fire was declared under control at 5:29 p.m. Due to the extent of the fire, extensive overhaul operations were required. Crews remained on scene for nearly four hours before clearing the incident.

One occupant sustained a burn to his foot and was evaluated at the scene.

Tonight’s drill focused on ground ladders and aerial operations, giving firefighters the opportunity to sharpen critical skills used on emergency scenes. Members practiced proper ladder placement, climbing techniques, and working at height while carrying tools and equipment. Crews also trained on aerial apparatus positioning to ensure safe and effective operations when responding to fires, rescues, and other emergencies.

Regular training helps ensure our members are prepared to safely and efficiently serve the Grand Island community when called upon.

Earlier today, Grand Island Fire Dispatch was notified by Water Department personnel of a chlorine leak alarm at the Town of Grand Island Water Department’s water tank and pumping station on Whitehaven Road. The Grand Island Fire Company responded to the facility to investigate the alarm.

Upon arrival, firefighters, working alongside Water Department personnel, detected a faint chlorine odor in the area outside the structure. Due to the potential hazards associated with a chlorine release, additional specialized resources were requested, including the Brighton Volunteer Fire Co #5 Hazardous Materials Team, Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station 914th Fire Department, and Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services.

Working together, responding agencies and Water Department personnel were able to identify and isolate a faulty valve and safely mitigate the hazard. Additional assistance was provided by the Erie County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police and Twin City Ambulance Corporation

At no time was there a threat to the public, and no evacuations were necessary. Following mitigation of the hazard, the facility was safely returned to The Town of Grand Island Water Department.

The Grand Island Fire Company would like to thank all responding agencies and Water Department personnel for their professionalism, technical expertise, and teamwork in bringing the incident to a safe resolution.

Earlier this morning, members of the Grand Island Fire Company had the honor of attending the annual Memorial Day Ceremony in the Town of Tonawanda alongside fellow first responders, veterans, and community members, in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Later in the morning, members of the Grand Island Fire Company joined members of the Grand Island community at the Town of Grand Island Memorial Day Ceremony at the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

As the Roll Call of our local fallen heroes was read aloud, we paused to remember sacrifices made across generations—from World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom. We especially remember LTC Terrence K. Crowe and all those whose courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

Memorial Day is more than a tradition—it is a promise that their service, sacrifice, and legacy will live on in our community and in our hearts.

The Grand Island Fire Company is honored to stand alongside our veterans, families, neighbors, and fellow communities in remembrance today. 🇺🇸
