Grand Haven Department of Public Safety

Grand Haven Department of Public Safety The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety provides Law Enforcement, Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety (GHDPS) provides comprehensive police and fire services to the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The agency responds to approximately 10,000 police-related calls for service annually and supports numerous community events through traffic safety, crowd management, and security operations. In addition to traditional law enforcement duties, all o

fficers are cross-trained as firefighters, enabling them to respond to medical emergencies and fire incidents, accounting for an additional 1,900 + calls for service each year. GHDPS officers work twelve-hour shifts, with each officer scheduled for seven shifts during a two-week pay period. One officer is assigned to staff the fire apparatus while the remaining officers operate from patrol vehicles, performing both police and fire duties within one of four designated districts. The department operates on a four-team structure, consisting of two day shifts and two night shifts, each under the direct supervision of a sergeant.

During National CPR & AED Awareness Week, we encourage everyone to take a few moments to learn this life-saving skill. CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival during a cardiac emergency, and knowing how to use an AED can make all the difference before first responders arrive.

You never know when you may be called upon to help a family member, friend, neighbor, or even a stranger. Consider taking a CPR class and be prepared to make a difference when seconds count.

Hands-only CPR will be offered this Wednesday at the kick off event HEARTSafe Tri-Cities.

We are honored to be a flag distribution location for Riding for Ryan.

Riding for Ryan is a West Michigan non-profit organization founded in November 2019 after the tragic loss of 6-year-old Ryan, who was struck and killed in a bicycle accident while riding with his father. Ryan loved life, adventure, and especially riding his bike. In his memory, the organization was created to help protect young riders through increased visibility and awareness.

Their mission is to provide free bicycle safety flags to children to help make them more visible to drivers while enjoying one of childhood’s favorite activities — riding bikes.

We are grateful to support this important cause and help spread awareness in our community. Bicycle safety flags are now available in the lobby of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

Yesterday, we celebrated and reflected on the retirement of Officer Tara Roels after 27 years of dedicated service to the City of Grand Haven.

For the first 8 years of her career, Officer Roels devoted herself to serving the schools and students of our community as a D.A.R.E. Officer. She made a lasting impact on countless young people through her guidance, mentorship, and commitment to building positive relationships.

After transitioning to road patrol, Officer Roels continued to find her calling in helping others, most recently serving in a primary CIT role where she consistently went above and beyond for those needing compassion, protection, and support the most. She has been instrumental in the growth and success of our department’s CIT programs and training initiatives.

Beyond the tremendous impact she made throughout the community, Officer Roels’ team-centered attitude and heart of gold made her invaluable within our department. You could always count on Tara, and she never hesitated to go above and beyond for others, even if it meant volunteering her own time to help.

We are incredibly grateful for her years of service, dedication, and friendship. While she will be greatly missed, we are excited for her as she begins this next chapter of life, one filled with well-earned relaxation, family, and the freedom to enjoy life on her terms.

Congratulations, Officer Roels. Thank you for everything.

Thank you to everyone who attended our first Community CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) training. We had a great turnout, especially considering the beautiful weather that day, and we appreciate those who took the time to become more educated on ways to potentially protect themselves and their loved ones during an unfortunate incident.

At the very least, trainings like this help shift our mindset toward greater situational awareness something that can make a difference every day.

We are grateful for the community’s commitment to learning and preparedness, and we look forward to offering this training again this fall stay tuned for upcoming dates!

The month of May is dedicated to fi****ms training, which an essential component of maintaining our Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards licensing and qualifications.

Our fi****ms cadre takes that responsibility a step further by making the most of every training day, incorporating physical fitness, stress-based scenarios, skill drills, and even a little friendly competition to challenge and sharpen our officers.

We’ve also been fortunate to have beautiful weather throughout the month, making for some outstanding days on the range.

Great work to our fi****ms cadre for putting together another exceptional training, and we’re grateful to be able to provide full-day, high-quality training opportunities for our staff as they continue to serve our community with professionalism and readiness.

As we wrap up National Public Works Week, we want to recognize and spotlight the incredible work of the City of Grand Haven Public Works Department.

Their team works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our community running, often working long hours, responding in the middle of the night, and handling challenges most never see. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving others often goes unnoticed, but their impact is felt every single day throughout our city.

At Grand Haven Public Safety, we deeply value our partnership with our DPW and are proud to work alongside the men and women who help keep our city safe, strong, and moving forward.

Please take a moment to recognize our DPW, not just for the work they do, but for the people they are and the service they provide to this great community.

We had the privilege of swearing in two of our newest officers, Officer Smith and Officer Addington, as they officially begin their careers with Grand Haven Public Safety.

Both recently completed the Grand Rapids Community College Police Academy and are wrapping up three weeks of in-house training before entering the next phase of their journey, field training. They will also graduate from the fire academy in a couple of weeks as well.

Officer Smith and Officer Addington both bring prior experience as cadets from other agencies and have chosen the Grand Haven community as the place to dedicate their calling to serve others. We could not be more impressed by their professionalism, character, and commitment to public service.

Taking the oath is more than just words, it is a promise to serve with integrity, courage, and dedication to this great community every single day.

Congratulations, Officer Smith and Officer Addington. We are proud to have you as part of the Grand Haven Public Safety legacy and look forward to the impact you will make in our community.
