Grand Forks' iconic Metropolitan Opera House, or The Met, was built in 1890 on land donated by transportation magnate James J. Hill, alongside the Great Northern Railroad. It was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by Minneapolis architect Warren Burrell, in the same architectural style as Hill's Minneapolis mansion. It is thought to be the only theatre ever designed by Burrell.

Philosophically, the building represented all the sophistication of the big cities back east in this new and emerging town on the frontier, attracting big touring companies and artists. Its location alongside the railroad made for easy unloading and loading of production sets, costumes and even performers. It certainly would have also commanded attention for any visitors arriving in Grand Forks by train.

The Met hosted many events over the years, including university lectures, school graduations, Vaudeville performances and all kinds of civic events.

The building was later adapted to host other kinds of entertainment, including a bowling alley, and other businesses, including a hardware store and an insurance company. Today, it's walls house a new tenant - Spud Jnr, as well as several apartments upstairs that afford a wonderful view of the Red River and downtown.
