✨ Student Spotlight ✨

Maria Zaman is in her final year of the Teaching & Leadership Ph.D. program. On the day of her M.A. English defense, Maria's graduate director encouraged Maria to explore her "knack for teaching". "He actually walked me over to the College of Education and Human Development, introduced me to someone there, and encouraged me to apply.... his encouragement helped me see education as more than something I enjoyed doing. I began to see it as the field in which I wanted to build my career."

She has viewed her experience in the program as transformative. Beyond the opportunities to contribute to research and present her work, she also values the mentorship from faculty. They have challenged her to think deeply and create her own scholarly identity. "The program has also strengthened my understanding of how teaching, research, leadership, and equity connect. I came into the program knowing that I loved teaching. I am leaving it with a much clearer understanding of the kind of scholar and educator I want to become."

Beyond the classroom, Maria works as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) on NSF-funded projects focused on STEM education, rural schools, teacher development, and multilingual learners. She also published a children's book! 📚

✨ Student Spotlight ✨

And we're back with our 2026-27 spotlights, first highlighting Caleb Olson! Caleb recently earned his undergrad degree in Kinesiology and decided to stay in the program to earn his master's. "A big reason for that was the relationships I built with professors like Dr. John Fitzgerald, Dr. Sandra Moritz, and Dr. Mark Rerick. They’ve had a huge impact on my experience.... I also really value how flexible the program is, allowing me to tailor my coursework to my specific interests and career goals."

Out of the classroom, Caleb plays on the football team and is on the CEHD Student Council, Intercollegiate Athletics Committee (IAC), Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He appreciates being able to represent others in a variety of roles. As a Student Council member, he wants CEHD students to know "we're here for them". He's looking forward to building on what Student Council started last year and making new connections.

"I’m really grateful for my experience at UND and within the Kinesiology program. It’s been a place where I’ve been able to grow both academically and personally, while also pursuing athletics at a high level."

Are you excited for the new academic year? We are!

Yesterday, CEHD welcomed incoming freshmen and transfer students with an orientation featuring Dean Shelbie Witte, Associate Dean of Student Success Jared Schlenker, department chairs, faculty, advisors and more. Afterward, our new on-campus students got to know their CEHD home base with a scavenger hunt through the building!

To all of our CEHD students: Whether you take classes online or on campus, and whether this is your first semester, your last or somewhere in the middle, we’re glad you’re here.

Here’s to a happy, fulfilling and successful fall semester!
