As a system moves through the region bringing widespread rainfall, so will gusty winds accompany this system. First will be gusty southerly winds 25-40 mph starting Monday morning, highest in the southern Red River Valley. Then comes a second wave of gust winds, this time behind a cold front Monday night into Tuesday. This brings 30-50 mph gusts, highest in Devils Lake Basin. Here, gusty winds will blow around unsecure light objects and may bring down small tree branches.

Low level moisture will increase northward today ahead of a cold front. The timing of the cold front will determine the location of potential severe storm development. Right now a level 2 out of 5 risk of severe storms exists Friday mid afternoon into the evening for areas from Baudette to Mahnomen to Wahpeton and points east thru west central MN. All hazards are possible, including large hail, damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes. Initial storm development looks to occur by 6 pm and then spread east/northeast exiting the area by 10 pm. Exact location and intensity of storms will be determined by exact location of the front and instability present late this afternoon. Stay tuned for updates and if in the outlook area have a way to receive warnings.
