For future storms,

1. If you do hear the sirens going off in Emerado, the Storm Shelter is located at the Emerado Public School!

2. Your friendly local firefighters (Emerado Fire) will have it open.

3. Look for an Emergency Vehicle with those awesome flashy flashy lights that will be located at Door 1.

4. When entering the building, please find the volunteer with the clipboard. Give them your family name and how many came with you and how many pets you have brought with you.

5. LISTEN to the firefighters, law enforcement officers and volunteers.

6. Stay in the location where the volunteers put you and your loved ones in the school. Yes, you might have to get very close to others, but we put you there for everyone's safety. And this way, you can get to know one another. Meet other residents of Emerado.

7. Do not wander around the school, do not enter any classrooms or offices.

8. Pets are welcome.

9. ALL have to obey the leash/kennel policy.
****All pets have to be on leashes or in kennels and must be controllable.
****This does include all sizes of pets. Small and big and all in-between.
***We do NOT need any pets or humans harmed during a storm.
***We do NOT supply any leashes or kennels.

10. Please clean up after your pets too.

The Emerado Public School is being very nice and letting us use their facility to protect our community.

The storm shelter will open up when we receive the weather warning.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch just issued

Severe weather Timeline
8 PM – 11 PM
Thunderstorms are expected to develop and organize west of the Red River Valley before moving east.
Storms may rapidly intensify as they approach the Grand Forks area.
Initial storms could produce large hail and isolated tornadoes.
10 PM – 2 AM
This appears to be the primary window for severe weather in the Grand Forks area.
Storms may evolve into a squall line capable of widespread damaging winds.
Wind gusts of 60–80 mph are possible in the strongest storms.
Brief embedded tornadoes cannot be ruled out.
Torrential rainfall and frequent lightning will accompany the storms.
After 2 AM
Storms should gradually weaken and move east into Minnesota.
Lingering showers may continue toward daybreak.
Temperatures fall into the middle 60s with decreasing winds.
Main Threats for Grand Forks
🌬️ Damaging Winds: Primary concern. Some forecasts indicate the potential for gusts approaching 75–80 mph in the strongest line segments.
🌪️ Tornadoes: A few tornadoes are possible across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, especially with any storms that remain discrete before forming a line.
🧊 Large Hail: Hail up to golf-ball size may occur with the strongest cells.
🌧️ Heavy Rain: Localized flooding of streets and low-lying areas is possible where storms repeatedly track over the same locations.

TORNADO THREAT 🌪️

Best chance for strong tornadoes:
🌪️ BRIGHT RED
👉 Hwy 281 and west
‼️ This is where we’ll watch for individual storm cells (think polka dots on the map) to become supercells. If that happens, a strong (EF-2+) tornado is possible.

Further east:
🌪️ DARK RED
👉 281 to I-29
‼️ This is where those individual cells are likely to merge into a line (what we call QLCS - quasi linear convective system). Once that happens, the strong tornado threat goes down. HOWEVER - it’s not zero. You can still get spins within that line, they’re just much harder to see and generally aren’t as strong.

It all has to time out perfectly. The low-level shear peaking and what the storm mode is at that point, will play a role in if we see tornadoes and how strong.

Update 1400hrs. - Road is back open!

Officers are currently on scene investigating an accident involving a motorcycle at the intersection of 62nd Ave S and S Columbia Rd. Columbia will be shut down from county road 6 to Pinehurst Drive. This road will be closed for a while to investigate and map the scene. Please use alternate routes.

On June 8, 2026, officers from the Grand Forks Police Department and deputies with the
Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury crash involving a motor vehicle and
motorcycle.
A city owned 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 24-year-old female, had been
traveling southbound on Columbia Road and turning east onto 62nd Street. A 2007 Honda
motorcycle, driven by a 25-year-old male, was traveling northbound on Columbia Road.
The motorcycle stuck the rear passenger side of the pickup truck.
The 25-year-old male driver of the motorcycle sustained significant injuries, medical aid
was provided by first responders, and he was transported by ambulance to Altru ER. The
24-year-old-female driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
Members of the UAS and CART team responded to the incident location.
Investigation continues.

Tuesday later in the day and especially at night is a time to be weather aware as severe storms may affect much of the area. It would appear that storms will develop to our west Tuesday afternoon and then move or develop eastward heading into the evening and overnight. Severe weather parameters are forecasted to be sufficient for damaging winds, large hail and possibly tornadoes. Much of this will depend on how things develop with this system.

Police Officer Cody Holte was shot and killed while responding to a call for emergency assistance resulting from shots fired after an attempt to serve eviction-related paperwork.

Officer Cody Holte was a 3 year and 3-month veteran of the GFPD, and a member of the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office Regional Water Rescue Team and the GFPD Honor Guard. In addition, Holte enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2010, he later commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the N.D. Army National Guard in 2015, where he served until the time of his death.

Holte leaves behind his wife and infant son, and we ask that you remember them in your thoughts and prayers.
