Returned for the season! As the weather has now turned warmer in general, this AED has been returned to it's outdoor cabinet for public access when 911 has been called.

In the event of a medical emergency, call 911 and Granby Dispatch telecommunicator will provide a 5 digit code for access to any of the Granby public access AEDs: Salmon Brook Park x2, Ahrens Park, Holcomb Farm, and the Booster Building at the GMHS Track/Turf field.

Each AED also has an accessory kit with a pocket mask, gloves, scissors, and safety razor, and a hand wipe.

A very simple AED for all users: one size fits all pads for all ages groups, a button for pediatric ages (less than 8 years old), and "read through" technology where the AED can see the victim's heart rhythm through your CPR and will keep you performing CPR at the typical 2 minute stop mark if there is no indication for a "shock." While we hope you never have to use the AEDs in town, we want any user to have as simple an experience as possible in high stress moment.

Our East Granby crew responded to a call for chest pain recently, only to find the patient's condition evolving into a heart attack during transport!

Multiple 12-lead EKGs performed in the ambulance allowed our Paramedics to catch this life-threatening event and transmit it to John Dempsey Hospital for early activation of their cardiac catheterization lab.

Basic and advanced cardiac care was provided as the wheels rolled to ensure that the blockage(s) could be cleared as quickly as possible to lessen the effects on the heart muscle.

GAA was able to achieve numerous benchmark time goals such as:
❤️ performing a 12-lead EKG in less than 10 minutes for chest pain patients
❤️ transmitting the "positive" EKG in less than 10 minutes
❤️ speaking with an Emergency Department physician in less than 10 minutes
❤️ providing more than 10 minutes of advanced notice to the hospital of arrival
❤️ first medical contact (FMC) [EMS] to device [opening the blockage] in less than 90 minutes!

Great job by Paramedics Josh R. and Mary Kate!

ICYMI

In the January issue of the Granby Drummer, Board member Steve Wortley shares how the power of three Granby charitable groups came to OUR rescue for one of our most used pieces of equipment! We appreciate the teamwork of community helpers in our backyard.

When it comes to making a charitable donation, sometimes the value of the needed item exceeds the amount of money one donor organization can afford. That’s exactly the case the Granby Ambulance Association (GAA) recently faced.

Introducing Granby 56-18, a 2025 Ford E-450 Series Type-III Ambulance built by Osage. We posted this unit when it first went in service on October 30th, 2025 and it has already reached 20,000 miles.

We wanted to give a big thank you to the Town of Granby leadership for helping fund this new ambulance.

GAA was honored to participate in National Read Across America Day with our friends at The Children's Clubhouse in Granby! We shared this "beary" good story of kindness, light, and making friends with the two year old classes this morning.

Thank you for inviting us, listening so well, and then sharing some playtime with us!

Granby Ambulance Association responded to a total of 144 calls last month. 38 of these calls were to East Granby and East Hartland, while 24 were mutual aid to the surrounding towns of Simsbury, Suffield, and Windsor Locks/Bradley International Airport. Additionally, GAA responded to Bloomfield for a whole blood request.

For the second time this year, due to large winter storms, GAA added additional staffing in Granby and East Granby overnight. Why do we add extra crews? The duration of calls can increase significantly, keeping an ambulance occupied for more than our usual 1.5 to 2 hours. This allows all three towns a buffer of safety against difficult travel. Hazardous ingress and egress to scenes can also become easier with more personnel to lift, move, and carry patients and equipment.

Thank you to all of our providers for their hard work!
