I have helped two turtles in my travels get out of the road this week that were in the middle of crossing - one on Truby and one on School Street 😩 please be cautious. 🐢

Yesterday, special permission was granted for this turtle to be transferred from NY to MA for emergency triage.

Berkshire County Turtle Rescue Inc.

Honoring Sarge

Last night, my heart broke. We lost a true ancient giant of our local waters.

Yesterday, I received a call from the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office about a massive, 28.5-pound Common Snapping Turtle who had been struck by a car. The injuries were severe—a bridge fracture, several carapace fractures, and a shearing injury across the top of his shell. We estimate this big old man was around 70 years old.

In an incredible act of compassion, the officers drove all the way to my workplace to hand him over to my care. The department asked if we could name him Sarge (short for Sergeant), a fittingly strong name for such a resilient survivor. I brought him straight home to stabilize him, starting him immediately on pain medications and IV fluids to combat severe dehydration from the mid-May heat. I promised him I would introduce him to all of you last night, but instead, I chose to step away from my phone to spend every moment focused on keeping him comfortable and fighting for him.

Sadly, Sarge passed away last night.
I am devastated, but I am infinitely grateful to the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office. To see law enforcement go so far out of their way to protect and care for our native wildlife means the world. It takes a community to protect these animals, and their kindness is something I won't forget.

This photo is of me holding Sarge's giant hand, Look at the scale of him. He survived seven decades of changes in this world, only to be taken out by a car.

We are officially entering nesting season. Female turtles are on the move to lay their eggs. Just yesterday, I transferred another gravid female to my wonderful friend Melissa at My Little Turtle Rescue, and right as I was leaving work, I got a call about another female snapping turtle on Lebanon Ave in Pittsfield. She was completely destroyed in a school zone, all of her precious egg squashed, it's a small neighborhood where people simply fly down the road.

It is heartbreaking. The loss we are seeing already this season—and every year prior—is completely preventable.

Please, please be aware of the roads. Turtles are slow-moving. Snapping turtles can look like debris or a large stone from a distance. If you wouldn't intentionally hit a giant rock in the road, why would you hit a giant turtle?

Rest easy, Sarge. You were deeply loved in your final hours, and we will keep fighting to protect the rest of your kind. 🐢💚

We don't rehabilitate turtles at Urban Wildlife Rehabilitation Inc, but this is a wonderful PSA regardless of location.

Turtle Protectors
This is truly a remarkable story - please read it and share it with a friend - it may save turtle lives. It speaks to turtles' remarkable ability to sustain life in situations where other living beings could not.

On April 14, we received a call from a homeowner whose backyard borders Grenadier Pond. Knowing that we ask people to call us about sick, injured or deceased turtles , they called to let us know that they had found a deceased turtle (they found turtle in this position). We always share that only a veterinarian can determine if a turtle is deceased using a device called a Doppler but when we arrived on scene, turtle was unmoving, turtle had been in the same position for 24 hours, and turtle did not move or make a sound when we placed them right side up in our bin so we were sure that this turtle was dead.

We received the call in the evening so was closed. Assuming turtle was dead, we placed the bin in a cellar and brought them to Toronto Animal Services the next day, April 15. The very observant Veterinarian Technician at Toronto Animal Services said that they heard turtle make a sound when they moved the bin into the back. Given that Animal Services didn't have a Doppler they recommended that we transport turtle to just to be sure.

When Turtle arrived at Toronto Wildlife Centre, they appeared dead even to their very trained eyes but to be sure they placed turtle on a heating pad overnight. You see when turtles are injured they lower their heart rate - their heart can beat as little as 1 beat per 10 minute so without being warmed up it's possible that a Veterinarian might use the Doppler and miss the beat. Once warmed, their heart beats faster. On April 16, after being warmed up overnight, turtle had a heartbeat!!!!!

To be clear - turtle was determined alive after being considered dead for 48 hours.

Currently they are receiving care at Toronto Wildlife Centre.

Miigwetch to homeowner, Toronto Animal Services and Toronto Wildlife Centre. Together you gave this turtle a chance and every turtle is so important.
