This location has contributed to steady growth for several decades, changing the land around the city from rural to suburban and urban. Graham is the county seat of Alamance County, which has an estimated population of 153,291 (2011 ACS). It shares borders with the City of Burlington (pop. 50,925) and the Town of Haw River (pop. 2,012).

📣🛤️Norfolk Southern rail replacement work is underway in Graham.

As of today (9/9), the following crossings are under construction and will remain closed:
– 23.7-NC Pomeroy Street
– 23.1-NC Washington Street

Closures are expected to last approximately 2-5 days at each crossing as crews install new rail and complete asphalt work. During each closure, no vehicle traffic will be permitted through the affected crossings.

Reminders for motorists:
– Follow posted detours
– Use caution near work zones
– Allow extra travel time

📣🛤️Norfolk Southern rail replacement work is underway in Graham.

As of today (9/8), the Pomeroy Street rail crossing is under construction and will remain closed as crews remove the existing rail and replace it with new rail.

Crews are planning to close the Washington Street crossing tomorrow (9/9). We will share updates as we receive them.

Motorists should expect closures, detours, and possible delays in these areas. Please follow posted signage, use caution near work zones, and allow extra travel time.

📣UPDATE: Rail Replacement Construction

Rail replacement work is planned for rail crossings in Graham as part of the Carolinian and Piedmont Passenger and Freight Improvements (CAPPFI) project.

Norfolk Southern has completed rail replacement in Mebane and is starting to replace aging rail in Haw River. Crews are estimated to complete 2-3 miles of track per day. We anticipate crews will begin work in Graham by the end of the week.

Closures are expected to last approximately 2-5 days at each crossing as crews install new rail and complete asphalt work. During each closure, no vehicle traffic will be permitted through the affected crossing. Motorists should use available detours, follow posted signage, and allow additional travel time.

🚧 RAILROAD CROSSING CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Norfolk Southern and the North Carolina Railroad Company are continuing rail replacement work through the region. As this project progresses, temporary road closures at railroad crossings will occur throughout Alamance County from East to West.

Residents and motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes when crossings are closed. Detour signs will be in place per the contractor.

♻️ Recycling Service Update: September 2

Republic Services, the City's contracted recycling provider, has notified us that a portion of Tuesday's recycling route was not completed due to mechanical issues with the collection vehicle.

Republic Services plans to return this morning, Wednesday, September 2, to complete the remaining Tuesday collections before beginning today's regularly scheduled Wednesday route.

Residents in the affected area, shown on the map, are asked to leave their recycling carts at the curb for collection.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as Republic Services works to complete the route.
