Last Thursday, 10/8, Ozaukee Central Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire.

When crews got on scene, they were directed to the rear of the house. A garbage can had caught fire and began spreading to the exterior of the residence.

Thanks to the quick initial actions of the homeowner and the rapid response of our firefighters, the fire was contained quickly, preventing extensive damage to the home.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the fire was likely caused by spontaneous combustion from improperly disposed rags in the garbage can. Estimated property loss is approximately $50,000.

Safety Reminder:
When working with stains, oils, or solvents, please remember to dispose of rags properly! Rags soaked in combustible liquids can spontaneously heat up as they dry and easily ignite if not stored or discarded safely in an approved, airtight metal container.

Fire Prevention Friday: Don't Let Your Smoke Alarms Sleep on the Job! 😴

Smoke alarms are your home’s first line of defense, giving you and your family the early warning needed to get out safely. But a smoke alarm only works if it’s properly tested and maintained.

This Week’s Task: Test & Refresh Your Smoke Alarms

🚨 Push to Test: Press the test button on every smoke alarm in your home. If the alarm sounds weak or doesn't beep at all, replace the batteries immediately.

🚨 Check the Coverage: You should have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, inside every bedroom, and outside sleeping areas.

🚨 Look at the Date: Check the manufacture date on the back of your alarms. If an alarm is 10 years old or older, the sensor degrades and the entire unit needs to be replaced.

🚨 Clean Away Dust: Vacuum or wipe down the covers to keep dust and cobwebs from causing false alarms or blocking sensors.

A quick push of a button today ensures your alarms are ready to protect you tonight.

🔥 October is Fire Prevention Month! Every Friday this month, Ozaukee Central will be sharing a quick fire safety checklist item to share with your friends, family, and coworkers to keep everyone safe... and help keep us in our beds at night! 😉

This Friday's checklist item is:

✅ Know Your Two Ways Out!

When a fire starts, every second counts. That’s why the first step in protecting your home and family is having a clear, practiced home escape plan.

This Week’s Task: Map & Practice Your Escape Plan

🚨 Find 2 Ways Out: Walk through your home and identify two ways out of every room (typically a door and a window). Ensure windows open easily and aren't painted shut or blocked by furniture.

🚨 Pick a Meeting Place: Designate a safe, fixed spot, a safe distance in front of your home (like a mailbox, flagpole, or specific tree) where everyone knows to gather.

🚨 Test the Plan: Walk through the plan with everyone in your home, including kids, so everyone knows exactly what to do and where to go if an alarm sounds.

🚨 Get Out and Stay Out: Once you're out, never go back inside for anything or anyone. Call 911 from your outside meeting place or a neighbor's house.

Taking 10 minutes today to walk through this simple plan can make all the difference in an emergency. 🚒

Crew members loaded up the truck today to bring hose over to Saukville Station for routine annual testing. Testing allows us to catch wear and tear early, pressure-check connections, and verify that every section of line meets safety specifications under pressure.

Taking care of our gear ensures that when you call, our equipment performs without missing a beat. 😎

Thanks to everyone who donated, volunteered, shared our posts, and helped spread the word, our latest blood drive was a tremendous success!

🩸 47 blood products collected (our goal was 39)!

❤️ 141 lives potentially saved!

🎉 7 first-time donors joined the lifesaving mission!

-Schedule: 24 on/24 off/24 on/24 off/24 on/96 hours off
-Overtime opportunities available
-2026 Wages:
FF/EMT: $56,650-$74,160
FF/Paramedic: $65,920-$89,610

✅ Minimum Requirements
-High School Diploma or GED
-Unrestricted Wisconsin Driver’s License
-Ability to pass background investigation, physical, agility & psychological testing
-Firefighter I Certification
-WI / NREMT Licensed EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic
