As part of our Monthly Fire Safety Tip series, the Eaton Township Fire Department continues to share practical reminders to help keep our community safe throughout the year.
With warmer weather here, many families are firing up the grill. This month, we’re focusing on how to enjoy outdoor cooking safely.
🍔🔥 May Fire Safety Tip: Grilling Safety
Grilling is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but it can quickly become dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken.
🔥 Grilling Safety Tips
Keep grills at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, siding, and overhanging branches.
Never use grills inside garages, enclosed porches, or near open windows.
Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area.
Never leave a grill unattended while in use.
Clean grease buildup from grills and trays regularly to prevent flare-ups.
🔥 Propane Grill Safety
Check hoses and connections for leaks before using your grill.
If you smell gas, turn off the grill immediately and move away from the area.
Open the grill lid before lighting to prevent gas buildup.
🔥 Charcoal Grill Safety
Use only charcoal starter fluid—never gasoline or other accelerants.
Allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them.
Dispose of ashes in a metal container and store it away from structures.
🚨 Important Reminder
If a fire occurs and cannot be quickly controlled, get away and call 9-1-1 immediately.
Grilling safety starts with awareness and preparation. A few simple steps can help prevent fires and injuries.
If you have questions about grilling safety or other fire prevention topics, the Eaton Township Fire Department is here to help.
