This morning, Walsh County Emergency Management held a Tabletop Exercise (TTX) based on an Active Shooter scenario at the courthouse. Twenty-one individuals from Walsh County Government, Walsh County Sheriff's Office, Grafton Police Department, Adams Fire Department, Cavalier Space Force Station, ND Dept of Emergency Services, Federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Valley Ambulance & Rescue, Inc, and Walsh County Health District participated in the four-hour exercise. A lot of good discussion took place that will help us improve our plans and procedures to deal with a potential threat at the courthouse and beyond.

There is a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon into the overnight hours tonight. Hail to the size of golf balls and damaging winds to 70 mph would be the primary threats, though there is still a low chance for tornadoes with severe thunderstorms that develop during the late afternoon and early evening.

If you ask an emergency manager what they do, the answer will probably depend on the day.

One day might be spent updating emergency plans. Another might involve coordinating with community partners, leading an exercise, supporting a special event, reviewing grant applications, or helping an organization prepare for a new risk.

The profession is always changing, requiring emergency managers to adapt, coordinate, and solve problems in a wide range of situations. No two days look the same because every community and organization is different.

What's one responsibility of your job that most people would never expect? Let us know in the comments to help others better understand the profession.
