At 10am the hatch began! It will take most of the day for all the Striped bass fry to hatch out and begin their swim to the top of the hatching jars. These jars are designed with a tube down the middle so the water flow is concentrated on the bottom of the jar creating an upswell. The jars also have a slide into a main channel which leads the fry into a larger vat for further maturation until we early next week when they will be ready to travel.

Spring is here and it’s Striped bass spawning week! The crew was here til 2am this morning but the 11.7 million eggs we put into the incubation system made it worth it! We will be babysitting these around the clock until next week, chronicling their development into fry (baby fish.) Our amazing colleagues, Dundee Fish Hatchery - Texas Parks and Wildlife, will take over from there while we focus our efforts on Smallmouth.

Spring time is all about the bass! Every year as we look at pairings between our Smallmouth bass, we sometimes decide to retire broodfish.

Last week we sent 57 of these beauties up to Meredith. In coordination with the Inland Fisheries Panhandle District - Texas Parks and Wildlife we even had some local students out to participate!

At 3-5lbs each, we hope Panhandle anglers will soon be tangling with one of these on the end of their line!

STOCKING CHANGE!

Due to this white stuff still covering the ground Wednesday afternoon out here at Possum Kingdom, the scheduled trout stocking for tomorrow morning (Thursday 1/29/26) is going to be moved to Friday 1/30.

We know it’s a last minute change, but we hope you understand!

As some of the new pond liners are getting finished up, we’re moving in Channel Catfish that will be part of the Neighborhood Fishin’ Program for 2026. Say hello to the newest residents of PKFH!

Speaking of Smallmouth, we retired 175 brood fish this year, splitting them between Possum Kingdom and Whitney with the help of the Waco and Whichita Falls District Management Offices. These 2019 year class fish were 3-3.5 lbs each and will make a nice addition to the end of your fishing line!

It all starts with this messy spatter of eggs. The Smallmouth bass have entered their spawning stage here at the hatchery as temperatures in our raceways have reached 16C, about 61 F. It’s starts slowly at that temperature, picking up with bigger and more frequent spawns when temps are steadily 20C (68F) before tapering off as it gets too warm. When we use the ponds to spawn, this process begins in April. Due to construction at the hatchery we will stock these out as fry with the help of the District Management teams to ensure they are released in suitable habitat. We look forward to updating yall as this spawning season progresses!

Y’all, it was a pretty great year! With 4.4 million Striped bass fry produced, so just under a 50% hatch rate, we exceeded the needs of the next stage of development, where fry are stocked into hatchery ponds for further growth into fingerlings. Due to current construction here at PKFH, our colleagues at the Dundee State Fish Hatchery are going to take over, raising the fish until they reach a size of 38mm or roughly 1.5 inches and then into the lakes they go! And thanks to the District Management teams of Inland Fisheries, we have found homes for the almost 2 million extra fry. And yes PK fans, Possum Kingdom is one of them! Thank you to all the support everyone has shown our team this week!
