They call it the Confidence Trailer. It is a training obstacle course in a semi trailer that is sponsored by the State of Indiana. Fire Departments can request it to train their personnel on different aspects of fire fighting. This trailer is not fun. This trailer is work. It will stress you. It will push you and when you come out, you have the confidence to know that you can do the job and stand beside your brothers and sisters and serve your community.

The 2026 IEMSA (Indiana Emergency Medical Services Association) award winners have been announced, and the Northeast east Fire District is proud to be represented by two recipients. Ben Masten is a winner of the Golden Siren Award. The Golden Siren is awarded to members who have served their patients, their home community, and the EMS industry for at least 25 years, in an impactful way. Ben is our EMS Assistant Chief, and been in the field for 34 years, Starting in Grabill, working for TRAA, and then coming back to Grabill and the Northeast Fire District. Katie Perry was named the Indiana EMS Association EMT of the Year. Katie has only been with the Northeast Fire District since since 2023, but in that time she has risen to shine. One interesting aspect of these two winners is the personal connection between the two of them. When Katie went through her initial EMT class, her primary instructor was - Ben Masten. The Northeast Fire District is lucky and proud to have these two award winning personnel as members of our department. We knew their worth before the awards ceremony, but it is good to see them recognized state wide.

The Northeast Fire District is proud to announce that Isaiah Reinders was recently a part of the Career Academy at Anthis Signing Day. As a High School student, Isaiah earned his Firefighter I/II, and his EMT certifications. These are the minimum requirements to work for the Northeast Fire District. In addition, he put in over 600 hours as an intern with us. During this time he learned the day-to-day life of a firefighter, and impressed every crew he worked with his skills, abilities, and motivation. Isaiah is currently in our Part-Time hiring process, and plans to apply in our next Full-Time Hiring Process. Thanks to the Career Academy for turning out trained and certified students that are ready to enter the working world on day one. Congratulations Isaiah!

We’re proud to share some incredible news from our fire department family.

One of our own, Ben, recently received a custom waterproof prosthetic leg, designed and built specifically for him by a talented group of students from Trine University. This project is more than just innovative engineering; it’s a powerful example of community, compassion, and dedication coming together.

Ben gives so much of himself to this department and to the people we serve every day. Seeing others step up to support him in such a meaningful way reminds us what the fire service and our community is all about.

We are beyond grateful to these students for their hard work, generosity, and commitment to making a difference. Your efforts will have a lasting impact!

Four Biomedical Engineering Trine University students designed a waterproof prosthetic for paramedic and double amputee Ben Masten for their senior design project.
