Last night, members of our office proudly took the stage at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center to be recognized for their significant achievements in Emergency Medical Services.

Deputy Justin Velez, Deputy Hannah Taylor, and Corrections Sergeant Richard Vega completed over 180 hours of classroom, laboratory, clinical, and scenario-based instruction and earned their official New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certifications.

Special congratulations to Corrections 1st Sergeant Paul Brahm, who has completed all requirements to become a New York State Certified Lab Instructor (CLI), and to Deputy Timothy Hluchan, who is continuing his progression toward becoming a New York State Certified Instructor Coordinator (CIC), the highest level of EMS educator certification in New York State. Deputy Hluchan completed a significant portion of the teaching internship and educational requirements and will return in the Fall to finish the remainder.

Congratulations to all the graduates and instructors for their achievements!

Giving our youth a voice.
Empowering their future.
Letting them be heard.

Four of our Building Bridges youth participants recently had the opportunity to speak at the Juvenile Conference in Albany, New York. Sheriff Arteta, Investigator Shanley, Deputy Galeno, and Founder of Building Bridges Initiatives, Isabel Lopez, were there by their side to support them and encourage them to use their voice to make and be a part of the change.

Through collaboration with youth advocates, community leaders, and law enforcement professionals, we're helping create safer communities and futures for young people.

The My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Coronation Ceremony was held today at Mount Saint Mary Community College. Notably, the Newburgh Enlarged City School District is a local chapter and hosted this event to honor its graduating members.

Sheriff Arteta was proud to be in attendance and support milestones like these that remind us of the power of fellowship, support, and building each other up as leaders in our communities.

Yesterday, Sheriff Arteta joined our team at the Office for the Aging’s 14th Annual Health & Fitness Day at Thomas Bull Park. Our Color Guard presented the colors to kick off the ceremony, while the K9 team, Deputy King, and K9 Nova, showcased their skills in a demonstration. If you visited our booth, you would have seen Deputy Meany and Investigator Gomez distributing information about the Yellow Dot Program, the Blue Envelope Program, and OCTAC. It was a beautiful day filled with great conversations, activities, and valuable resources.

Yesterday, our Deputies participated in a joint enforcement initiative with the Town of Wallkill PD and the NYSP to ensure operators were wearing their seatbelts.

As you head out during this Memorial Day Weekend, you will see more deputies on the roads as part of “Click It or Ticket.” This campaign runs from May 11 to May 31, to remind drivers and their passengers of the importance of buckling up.

According to NHTSA, in 2024, 9,758 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts. Among the young adult (18 to 34) passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2024, 59% were unbuckled making it one of the highest percentages for all age groups.

Seat Belts Save Lives.
