The 9/11 memorial ceremonies held in each community shared the same message: we will not forget. Sheriff Arteta traveled from the Town of Deerpark to the Village of Washingtonville and ended the night at the Orange County Arboretum. We are proud to be members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and proud of Orange County for honoring the heroes and families of 9/11. 🇺🇸

09/11/2026

Our message is clear: 25 years later, we will never forget the innocent lives lost and the courage of the heroes who responded to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Members of our motor unit—Deputy Galeno, Deputy Dewitt, Deputy Pastor, and Deputy Matthews—had the honor of participating in the 9/11 Memorial Ride. They joined law enforcement agencies from across the country to es**rt hundreds of riders on a journey of remembrance spanning more than 750 miles.

The ride took participants from Gettysburg to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, then to the Pentagon, and finally to the World Trade Center. This event served as a powerful reminder of the lives lost, the heroes who responded, and the sacrifices made on September 11.

Organized through America’s 9/11 Foundation, the ride carries that mission forward by raising funds for college scholarships benefiting the children of first responders.

We are proud of our members who represented the Sheriff’s Office with honor and professionalism.

Please join us in congratulating Jeffrey Gomez on his promotion to Investigator!

As part of our ongoing STRIVE Initiative, Investigator Gomez will focus on high-risk domestic violence cases. He will employ trauma-informed investigation techniques to identify patterns, and assess threats to help prevent intimate partner violence. In this role, he will collaborate closely with the District Attorney’s Office and Fearless! Hudson Valley to connect victims with protection and support while holding offenders accountable.

Congratulations, Investigator Gomez!

The safety of Orange County residents during an emergency is the Sheriff's Office's highest priority. Sheriff Arteta and Sgt. Huchital recently participated in a simulated natural disaster exercise alongside County Executive Neuhaus, OC Emergency Management, and various law enforcement and county agencies.

This large-scale training enhances our teamwork, preparedness, and response capabilities, ensuring we are ready to assist you when the next disaster strikes Orange County.

09/09/2026

As the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, approaches, Sheriff Arteta and members of the Sheriff's Office decided to take positive action for the community to honor the victims and first responders of 9/11 by performing good deeds and giving back locally.

In partnership with United Way, we visited the Hudson Valley Regional Food Bank to sort and package goods for distribution to those in need. Our goal is to support our neighbors, strengthen our community, and make a positive difference wherever we can.

Lend a hand at the upcoming 24-hour volunteer-a-thon on September 18th-19th. For more information or to sign up, visit regionalfoodbank.net

The Sheriff’s Office is excited to join local farmers, businesses, and families at this year's Pine Island Onion Festival, taking place on Sunday, September 6th. Our deputies will be present throughout the festival to help ensure everyone's safety as they enjoy all the wonderful aspects of Pine Island and Orange County.

Sheriff Arteta reminds residents that the festival is not just a celebration of one of our region’s most cherished crops, it’s also a tribute to the farmers, such as Louie Myruski owner of LJM Growers, who works the land to keep our community thriving!

As we head into Labor Day Weekend, our deputies will be out across the county conducting extra patrols to ensure the safety of our roadways and communities.

Historically, Labor Day Weekend sees increased traffic and travel, which can lead to a higher risk of accidents, serious injuries, and fatalities. As part of this weekend’s High Visibility Engagement Campaign, deputies will be focused on deterring and reducing impaired and drunk driving while promoting safe driving practices.

Please plan ahead, drive responsibly, and never drive while impaired.

From everyone at the Sheriff’s Office, we wish you a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend!

September is National Recovery Month, a time to raise awareness about mental health and substance use disorders.

Addiction is a significant issue in our community. Deputies witness its impact weekly in homes, through emergency calls, in the jail, and within the court system. The message is simple: substance use disorder is a health condition, prevention works, treatment is effective, and recovery is possible.

Our goal is to provide better information to families before a crisis leads to an overdose, an arrest, or a tragedy.

For more information, visit the National Sheriffs’ Association at http:www.sheriffs.org/opioideducation or contact us by email: [email protected].

Sheriff Arteta was honored to stand alongside educators, community leaders, law enforcement officials, students, and residents at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Newburgh Free Academy Career and Technical Education Center.

Whether in criminal justice, auto body work, construction, or culinary arts, students will have opportunities to learn and grow.

The relationships among students, educators, law enforcement, and families are essential for the success of our young people!

More residents are taking advantage of electric bicycles, or e-bikes, as a convenient and efficient way to get around.

Sheriff Arteta reminds residents of the importance of knowing and understanding the laws and safety expectations while on The Heritage Trail.

You may notice an increased presence of Deputies along the trail in the coming weeks. They will be there to engage with cyclists, answer questions, and provide education on the rules and regulations.

Our goal is to help ensure the trail remains safe and enjoyable for everyone!

As the new school year approaches, we are excited to welcome 9 School Security Deputies to our team!

Managing over 60 part-time deputies across 26 schools in 8 school districts in Orange County is no small task. Therefore, we are pleased to have Sergeant Brian Kelly serving as the School Security Division Supervisor. He has educated, instructed, and trained deputies to collaborate with school staff in creating a secure and welcoming environment that fosters learning and growth.

"Ensuring the safety of our schools is a top priority, and we are committed to providing highly trained professionals to maintain that security," said Sheriff Arteta.

Each School Security Deputy (SSD) is a certified law enforcement officer who has chosen to continue their service by working part-time to safeguard our schools. These individuals are more than just security personnel; they are seasoned professionals who bring years of experience, training, and a strong commitment to public safety.

Officer Conklin was a beloved son, brother, and uncle, and his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Sheriff Arteta and members of the Sheriff’s Office will always keep Jason and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

A special thank you to the members of FOP Lodge 957 and President Michael McGinn for continuing to honor Officer Conklin and keep his memory alive.

We are excited to announce the successful completion of the second class of the Success Map Initiative’s Business Bootcamp at the Orange County Correctional Facility. Over the course of four weeks, participants gained practical skills in business planning, finance, marketing, and the essential systems needed to take charge of their lives. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to continue their development with 12 months of post-release coaching, offering them a second chance to enhance their skills in education, seize new opportunities, find purpose, and plan for the future.

This is just one of the several new programs that Sheriff Arteta has introduced to provide an avenue toward a career path rather than recidivism.

Sheriff Arteta proudly joined Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco and members of various law enforcement agencies at a special event hosted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office at Krucker’s in Pomona.

Members of the OCSO motor unit, Deputy Galeno and Deputy Matthews, had the honor of es**rting families and children who are currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House in New York City. These families are in the area while their children receive critical medical treatment.

This event provided them with a day to relax, enjoy the outdoors, spend time with officers from the K-9 and Mounted Units, and explore marine and aviation displays. They finished the day with toys provided by the Marine Corps League!
