Middlebury Street Mural Project

Middlebury Street Mural Project Dear Neighbor:

How many times have you driven down Middlebury Street and noticed the long, concrete wall on the corner of Middlebury and 6th Street?

How many times have you recognized the stretch of wall as a perfect canvas for public art? Art in public spaces serves multiple purposes: from building community spirit and pride, to attracting visitors, to increasing property values. As residents of Goshen’s north side, we look forward to accomplishing all three of these things with YOUR help. We are a group of residents working with neighborhood

youth and local artists to create a community mural on the Middlebury Street wall (see accompanying photos). This wall held another mural until gang tagging forced the city to paint over the artwork. Quickly reclaiming the space for public art will send a strong message to vandals. We invite you to join us in beautifying and strengthening our neighborhood. This project is the result of participation in NeighborWorks America’s annual “Community Leadership Institute” (CLI). The national CLI convention boasts nearly a thousand attendees from across the country, all convening in the interest of neighborhood revitalization. LaCasa sponsors local residents at this event each year, providing access to two days of professionally led workshops and a small project grant to bring back to Goshen. We look forward to completing the mural during the summer of 2012. We thank you in advance for considering a donation to this fun and worthwhile project! Sincerely,

Middlebury Street Mural Project Comittee

GRAFFITI REMOVAL INFO:

Cold weather makes removal more difficult, so the quicker the wall gets cleaned up, the better!

Anyone who wants to work alongside the street department worker to remove the graffiti can call 534-9711 to find out what time he may be there on any given day. Or you can be old fashioned and just go over and see if he’s there. (Please take a clean rag!) All ages welcome!

Also – some college students from Chicago who are volunteering at LaCasa MIGHT be able to work on the mural today (possibly early afternoon. If you see them out there, go on out and join them. Again – with a clean rag!).

We are using a product called Krud Cutters – Graffiti Removal Spray. It’s about $14.00 a bottle at Snyder’s Paint. Feel free to plan and carry-out your own work party if your schedule doesn't mesh with the Street Department.

If you go out to clean up the wall, please take some photos to share on facebook. Let's tell the GOOD story of people supporting and maintaining their neighborhood!
