1898
The Adams Store/Goshen Historical Museum

The Adams Store, 124 S. Main St., was another family-owned and operated business on Goshen's Main Street, operated by three generations of the Adams family.
Charles Granville Adams originally came to Goshen from Rolling Prairie to enter a business with F.E.C. Hawks. Their business was purchasing rye grain which was then shipped to a distillery in Toledo, Ohio.
In 1898, Adams founded his men's clothing store at a site formerly occupied by The Goshen News. The business was housed in one room of that building. A few years later, Adams found he needed more room and the operation was moved to its present location.
Adams' sons, Charles Herbert and George Chester, joined the firm around the turn of the century and Polly Adams, Charles Herbert's daughter began working in the business in 1927. George Chester died in 1917 and Charles Herbert became the sole owner in 1930 after his father died. He was active in the business until shortly before his death in 1971. At the time of his death, C.H. Adams had been a Gosheh merchant for over 70 years.
In addition to men's clothing and jewelry, the store has been well known for its line of Boy Scout accessories which have been stocked since 1910.
Polly Adams (1909-2009) sold the building in 1997 to the Goshen Historical Society, the store contains items from its early history including a safe that Charles Granville Adams brought with him when he first moved here.
