This past weekend 4 of our firefighters went though a shortened down Driver/operator class. They had 2 four hour nights and one 12 hour day. They had classroom instruction then they went out in the field and practiced the skills they learned in the classroom. This was a fast and furious course. These pictures are just a few of the topics they learned. I am proud to say all four passed. They learned skills that are a very crucial part of what we do as firefighters. Knowing how how to drive a large fire apparatus and how to use the pump and get water flowing. A huge thank you to lead instructor Lt. Robert Thomas, Asst. Chief Joe Sabala and Lt. Al Hagen.

Just after 4pm yesterday afternoon we were dispatched to a report of a wind driven brush fire that was threatening structures. Upon arrival there was brush, grass, multiple piles of wood and three outbuildings on fire and two structures threatened. Mutual aid was immediately called from Bliss Fire, Wendell Fire, Hagerman Fire and Shoshone Fire. Firefighters protected the homes and were able to get the flames knocked down in about a half hour. The two homes did have defensible space around their homes which helped the flames slow down as fire got close. Crews remained on scene for 3.5 hours putting out hot spots. I want to thank our mutual aid partners for there assistance. When the situation arises our neighbors are always willing to come help out!

I just want to remind everyone that the grass and brush are already extremely dry. Fires are accruing now that we don’t usually see until mid to late June. If you going to burn in the rural areas please obtain a burn permit from the Idaho Department of Lands website, and notify the fire dept when you are going to burn. If you live in the city please obtain a burn permit from city hall. They are all free.

Last Wednesday night at drill we held a push in ceremony for our new type 6 brush truck! The term push in dates back to the 1800’s. After crews returned from a call, the horses were unable to back the equipment into the bay, so the firefighters had to do it. Over time the invention of motorized apparatus took the place of horses and the need to push in equipment. However, the legacy of the push in was secured. The video shows a timeline from the time we took delivery to push in and in service! Updating apparatus is essential in keeping our firefighters safe while enroute and on scene, but also help insure our community is protected with updated equipment.
