🦋 Wildlife Wednesdays

Butterflies often get all the attention, but Michigan is home to many incredible moth species that deserve some admiration too!

Recently, one of our Rangers spotted this beautiful Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus) resting near the beach at Fort Gratiot County Park and stopped to capture some photos. With a wingspan that can reach up to 6 inches, the Polyphemus Moth is one of the largest moths found in North America. Its distinctive eye-like markings on the hindwings help startle potential predators, making it a fascinating example of nature's creativity.

These native moths are beneficial to the environment, harmless to people, and play an important role in local ecosystems. While the adults only live for a short time, they contribute to the food web and help support biodiversity throughout Michigan.

🦌🌿 Wildlife Wednesdays: Spotted in the Park! 🌿🦌

Recently, one of our maintenance staff came across this adorable white-tailed deer fawn near the horse rings at Goodells County Park. While it may appear to be alone, that's completely normal!

White-tailed deer mothers often leave their fawns hidden in tall grass, brush, or wooded areas while they forage for food. During their first few weeks of life, fawns rely on their spotted coats for camouflage and will remain very still to avoid attracting predators. Their mothers typically return several times a day to nurse and care for them.

If you encounter a fawn while visiting one of our parks, the best thing you can do is admire it from a distance and leave it undisturbed. Human interference can cause unnecessary stress to both the fawn and its mother. Remember: if a fawn appears healthy and uninjured, it's usually right where it needs to be.

White-tailed deer are commonly seen throughout many of our county parks and are just one of the many wildlife species that call these natural areas home. Whether you're hiking, fishing, paddling, or simply enjoying the outdoors, keep your eyes open, you never know what amazing wildlife encounter awaits!
