🚨 SIRENS MEAN PULL OVER:
It’s Not a Suggestion, It’s a Life on the Line 🚨
We’ve all seen it: a fire truck, ambulance, or a volunteer’s POV (Personally Owned Vehicle) flying down the road with lights flashing and sirens wailing, only for traffic to freeze, panic, or completely ignore them.
When emergency vehicles are running "hot," seconds count. Here is what you need to know and do to help us help someone in need:
🚒 1. Big Rigs: Fire Trucks & Ambulances
If you see a massive fire engine or ambulance behind you with lights and sirens, Pull to the Right and Stop.
• Do not panic and slam on your brakes in the middle of the lane.
• Do not try to outrun the truck.
• Signal, move safely over to the right shoulder or curb, and come to a complete stop until they pass.
🚘 2. The "POV" (Personally Owned Vehicles)
This is the one that trips people up. In many communities, volunteer firefighters and EMTs respond to emergencies in their own personal trucks or cars. If you see a civilian vehicle behind you running courtesy lights (often white, red, depending on your state laws) and a siren/horn: PULL OVER FOR THEM TOO.
• They are driving to the fire station or directly to an accident scene.
• Just because it isn't a giant red truck doesn't mean it isn't an emergency. Someone's house could be burning, or someone might be trapped in a car. Give them the right of way.
🛑 What NOT to do:
• Don't tailgate: Following an emergency vehicle too closely to get through traffic is illegal and incredibly dangerous.
• Don't block intersections: If you are at a red light, try to pull to the right. If you can't move safely, stay put until the emergency vehicle finds a way around you. Don't push yourself blindly into oncoming cross-traffic.
Bottom Line: The person we are rushing to save could be your neighbor, your friend, or your family member. Please stay alert, put down the distractions, and Pull to the Right for Sirens Bright!
