Are you Active GVA? Active GVA is an upcoming initiative by Goochland Parks, Recreation and Facilities that is seeking to endorse, provide, and create a healthy, active mindset in Goochland County. The initiative will include the active promotion of the County’s parks and recreation amenities that are more self-directed in nature. These amenities include the County’s trails, James River access for water recreation, our open gym sports, and our indoor facilities such as the weight and cardio rooms.

Parks and trails can improve health in several ways; increasing physical activity, improving mental health, cultivating community interaction, and reducing personal injury.
Self directed physical activity has been shown to positively impact people of all ages in the following ways;

- Decreases risks of coronary heart disease, certain types of cancers, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity, and high blood pressure

- Studies also show that local park and recreation users report fewer visits to a physician for purposes other than checkups than did non park users.

- Every time a sedentary person walks a mile, they add 21 minutes to their life, saving society 34 cents in medical and related costs.
