🚨 GONZALES POLICE DEPARTMENT – PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE 🚨

Over the last several weeks, officers have observed an increase in vehicles operating with window tint that exceeds the legal limits set by the State of Texas. We ask all drivers to take a moment to review and comply with Texas Transportation Code §547.613 (Restrictions on Windows):

Quick Breakdown of the Law:

• Front side windows must allow at least 25% light transmission
• Windshield must remain clear except for the manufacturer’s AS1 line (top strip)
• Rear windows may be darker if the vehicle is equipped with side mirrors
• Any tint that obstructs or reduces the driver’s clear view is prohibited

⚖️ Operating a vehicle with illegal window tint is a misdemeanor offense and may result in a citation.

🏢 Business Accountability:
Businesses that install or apply window tint that does not meet Texas legal standards may also be held accountable under state law. It is important that both vehicle owners and installers ensure compliance before a vehicle is returned to the roadway.

🚔 Why do police vehicles have darker tint?
Under Texas Transportation Code §547.613, law enforcement vehicles are exempt from standard tint restrictions due to officer safety and operational needs.

These laws are in place to protect both motorists and law enforcement. Being able to clearly see inside a vehicle during a traffic stop is critical for safety, and proper visibility helps prevent crashes—especially at night.

As we head into the warmer months, we encourage everyone to:
✔️ Drive safely and obey traffic laws
✔️ Wear your seatbelt
✔️ Stay alert for motorcycles, pedestrians, and other drivers

Let’s work together to keep Gonzales safe.

🚨 GOOD MORNING GONZALES 🚨

We want to remind everyone:

🛑 When you see a school bus with stop signs extended and flashing red lights — YOU MUST STOP.
This is not optional.

🚸 Children are getting on or off the bus, and their safety depends on YOU paying attention.

⚖️ STATE LAW (Texas Transportation Code § 545.066):
Drivers approaching a stopped school bus from either direction must stop when the bus is operating flashing red lights or a stop arm. You cannot proceed until:
• The bus starts moving
• The driver signals you to go
• The red lights stop flashing

🚫 The only exception is if you are on the opposite side of a divided highway with a physical barrier.

💰 FINES:
• First offense: $500 – $1,250
• Second offense: Up to $2,000 + possible license suspension

🚸 SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY REMINDER:
When school zone lights are flashing, the reduced speed limit is in effect — even if you don’t immediately see children present.

⚠️ Slow down, stay alert, and watch for:
• Children crossing the roadway
• Crossing guards and staff
• Increased traffic and stopped vehicles

💰 Speeding in a school zone can result in increased fines, especially when workers or children are present.

⚠️ These laws are in place to protect our kids — not to inconvenience drivers.

Let’s do our part to keep Gonzales safe.

On April 18, 2026, officers with the Gonzales Police Department responded to a cow running at large within the city limits.

The animal was originally reported near Sarah DeWitt Drive (Wells Fargo area) after it jumped out of a trailer while the owner was on location. The cow continued running and made its way to State Highway 97, creating a serious hazard for motorists.

👮‍♂️ Officers and multiple citizens attempted to safely catch and contain the cow for an extended period of time. Despite these efforts, the animal continued to run through roadways and could not be safely secured.

The owner, who initially contacted authorities and remained on scene requested the animal be put down, as it was already intended for butchering.

⚠️ This was NOT the first option considered. However, due to the immediate danger to the public, with the animal actively running along major highways, officers made the decision to euthanize the animal to prevent a serious or potentially fatal accident.

We appreciate the assistance from citizens who helped during this incident and thank the community for your patience.

🐄 Reminder to Livestock Owners: Please ensure animals are properly secured. Loose livestock on roadways can quickly become a life-threatening situation.
