Happy Cinco de Mayo! 🪅

Last weekend, we celebrated the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla with a variety of programs highlighting Mexican and Tejano culture. It was a fun and festive day honoring the blend of traditions and the shared history between Texas and Mexico.

Visitors learned about the history of piñatas—once used as religious symbols representing blind faith, overcoming sin, and being rewarded with gifts from above. We also enjoyed Nachos for “Nacho,” where we explored the origins of the nickname Nacho and talked about this beloved Tex‑Mex classic. To top it all off, guests played Goliad‑themed Lotería, a traditional Mexican game, designed just for the park!

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us in celebrating the rich cultural heritage that shapes our community. We hope to see you at our next program!

Last night we had a spectacular Illumination! The sky cooperated with us all evening and gave us a nearly perfect progression of the sun across the altar at Mission Espiritu Santo. During the peak of the Illumination, Greg Bentz and company performed Salve Regina in Latin. Part of their performance provided the audio for this time lapse video. ☀️

It's that time of year again! The annual Illumination occurs on April 16th, when the sun lines up perfectly through a window to illuminate the crucifix above the front altar of Mission Espiritu Santo.

As the sun begins to set, guests will be able to visit the chapel at Mission Espiritu Santo de Zuniga to view the annual phenomenon known as the Illumination. Around 7:00 pm, the sun will shine through the western facing window and light up the crucifix on the front altar.

WEATHER PERMITTING- The illumination only happens during sunny or mostly sunny weather conditions. If heavy cloud cover is present, the Illumination will not be visible. Be sure to check our page on April 16th, as we will be providing weather updates for those travelling to witness the Illumination!
