Attention Parents! Do you have a child who has an interest in aviation and wants to be a pilot when they grow up? Civil Air Patrol is the answer. One of Civil Air Patrol’s Three Main Missions is Aerospace Education. Our squadron places a large emphasis on aerospace education in our cadet program. If you are interested in learning more about Civil Air Patrol and want to check us out, click here https://santabarbara.cap.gov/join/prospective-cadet-members
Below are some of the activities that Squadron 131 Cadets participate in:
Orientation Flights
Cadets are given the opportunity to fly in Civil Air Patrol aircraft (Cessna 172 and Cessna 182) as well as Civil Air Patrol Gliders, where they are introduced to the fundamentals of flight. These hands-on experiences allow cadets to see how the lessons they learn in aerospace education are applied in real-world aviation.

Cadet Wings
This program enables cadets to work toward earning their private pilot’s license. Through structured flight training and mentorship, cadets gain valuable flight experience, which can lay the groundwork for a future career in aviation. This program pays for the cadets’ entire training. The average cost to get a pilot license is $20,000.

Flight Simulator
Recently Squadron 131 was able to acquire a grant for a new flight simulator and cadets have access to a state-of-the-art flight simulator, providing a safe and controlled environment to practice flying skills and maneuvers. The simulator is an excellent tool for cadets to build confidence and gain familiarity with cockpit controls and procedures.

Aerospace Lessons
In addition to practical flight experience, cadets participate in lessons that cover a wide range of aerospace topics. These lessons include subjects such as aerodynamics, space exploration, and the history of aviation, giving cadets a comprehensive understanding of aerospace science and technology. These lessons are taught by both Cadets and Senior Members.

"The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, ushered CAP into a new era of homeland defense. The following day, a CAP Cessna 172, the only nonmilitary aircraft allowed in the nation’s airspace, provided emergency management officials the first high-resolution images of the World Trade Center site. Nationwide, CAP volunteers transported blood and medical supplies, provided communication and transportation support and assisted state and federal officials." - History of Civil Air Patrol, Civil Air Patrol Website https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/about/history-of-civil-air-patrol

Emergency services are our most crucial mission and are the most important reason behind the founding of CAP during World War II.

Aerial Observation ✈️

- Aerial Observation is conducted by CAP's fleet of over 500 aircraft nationwide. Aerial Observation is used to assess damage from floods, fires, hurricanes and much more. Aerial Observation can also be utilized to locate missing people and vehicles.

Ground Teams 🦺

- Ground Teams are used to locate missing people and vehicles such as crashed aircraft. Ground teams use radio technology to locate ELT(Emergency Locator Transmitters) when a an aircraft has crashed. One of the special things about these ground teams is that cadets can operate as a part of the team once properly qualified.

Emergency Relief ⛑️

- Civil Air Patrol plays a large part in emergency relief all over the country. One common example of this is when a disaster like a hurricane or fire happens. CAP often aids in the distribution of vital recourses to those effected by these disasters.

CAP at Ground Zero 🚨

- One of the most famous emergency services operations that Civil Air Patrol completed was aerial photography at Ground Zero on 9/11. A Civil Air Patrol aircraft was the first aircraft on scene to observe the disaster. These images were used to analyze the damage and aid in the response, potentially saving hundreds of lives.
