Officer Ricardo Ayala, assigned to the Santa Barbara Area since graduating from the CHP Academy in 2016, was recognized for his heroic actions during a plane crash on January 29, 2025, and honored with the prestigious H. Thomas Guerry Award for Valor.
The H. Thomas Guerry Award is one of Santa Barbara Countyβs highest law enforcement honors, recognizing extraordinary courage, professionalism, and service above and beyond the call of duty.
While conducting a traffic stop near Los Carneros Road and US-101, Officer Ayala witnessed a small aircraft fall from the sky and crash into a nearby field. Without hesitation, he responded to the burning wreckage, climbed a perimeter fence, and sprinted toward the aircraft to render aid.
Officer Ayala pulled the severely injured pilot away from the flames moments before the aircraft became fully engulfed. He also provided life-saving aid to the co-pilot until paramedics arrived.
Thanks to Officer Ayalaβs courage, quick thinking, and selfless actions, both victims survived. His dedication to safety, service, and the protection of others represents the very best of the California Highway Patrol.
Thank you, Officer Ayala, for your bravery and commitment to the community.
