Solid Waste crews are approximately one week behind with leaf and limb collection. Although it is not unusual to fall a few days behind this time of year due to the volume of leaves on the ground, equipment issues have worsened the problem.

To address ongoing issues with older equipment, Public Works purchased and received two new leaf machines this year. Unfortunately, both new machines have been out of service due to software issues that are currently being addressed by the manufacturer. Three of the four older machines have been down, but one was put back in service this week and the other two should be repaired within the next week or two.

Our crews will be working diligently to get caught up.

Due to the threat of strong wind gusts overnight, customers on the Thursday solid waste collection route are asked to wait until the morning to put out garbage carts. Refuse collection will not begin until after 8 a.m. Thursday.

Residents are reminded not to place trash bags, boxes, or any other items next to or on top of the garbage bins. Our automated garbage trucks cannot collect these items.

To prevent further leaf and limb collection delays, please separate the leaves from small limbs and pinecones. Limbs and pinecones damage the leaf vacuum blades and must be collected separately from the leaves.

The holiday solid waste schedule is as follows:
■ Tuesday, Dec. 27, route will be serviced Thursday, Dec. 29.
■ Thursday, Dec. 29, route will be serviced Friday, Dec. 30.
■ Friday, Dec. 30, route will be serviced Saturday, Dec. 31.
■ Monday, Jan. 2, route will be serviced Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The City’s Solid Waste Division continues to experience significant delays with leaf and limb collection throughout the city. Solid Waste is experiencing the same personnel, equipment, and parts supply chain issues as other businesses and municipalities nationwide. The leaf and limb division has five total leaf machines, and three have been down for extensive repairs and/or are waiting on parts. With less than half the equipment operational, it is taking considerably longer to collect and dispose of the leaves. A new leaf machine was ordered in July 2022 to replace a 1999 model, but delivery was delayed until March 2023 due to a lack of available chassis. We are in the process of requesting a second leaf machine in January to replace a 2006 model. As soon as additional equipment is repaired and operational, it will be put into service. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work through these challenges.
