Latest update from Wayne County Emergency Management:

Good morning,

There is not much to share in the way of updates to the forecast this morning. Current forecasts still call for wintry precipitation to begin for our area late tonight into the early morning hours on Sunday. This is expected to begin as sleet and quickly transition to freezing rain into Sunday. There may be a lull in weather activity during the day on Sunday before a second band of precipitation along the cold front moves through Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. The forecast amounts from NWS Raleigh show Wayne County receiving around a quarter inch of freezing rain. This will be followed by dangerously cold temperatures heading into next week. Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages. The forecast now calls for a transition to all rain here before ending early Monday morning. There will still be a prevalent black ice threat on Monday and Tuesday. We are under a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 7:00pm this evening until 1:00pm Monday.

I want to reiterate the safety messages we have been pushing this week in relation to the storm. Keep all non-essential travel to a minimum. Have your home prepared for the possibility of long-lasting power outages. Have plenty of food and water on hand. Have blankets and multiple layers of clothing available for each person. Top off fuel in your vehicle and any alternative heating sources. Remember to limit time outdoors. Properly ventilate emergency heat sources and never run a generator indoors. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Please check on your family and neighbors.

Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and we encourage everyone to sign up for CodeRed Alerts at www.waynegov.com

The Wayne County Emergency Operations Center will not be activated for the storm, however OES staff will continue to monitor the weather and push out updates as needed. If you need Emergency Services staff, you can request them through the usual channels of contacting them through dispatch. I will be available by phone and email for any questions. If I can help you or your agency in any way, do not hesitate to give me a call.

Public Safety Notice – Abandoned Vehicles During Severe Weather

If you see a vehicle stopped on the side of the road with yellow scene, caution, or fire tape attached, please be aware:

The vehicle has already been checked by emergency responders to ensure there are no occupants in or around the vehicle. This marking helps prevent duplicate searches and allows responders to focus on motorists who may still need assistance.

If you encounter a vehicle without tape and are concerned about someone’s safety, please contact local law enforcement or dial 911 to report it.

Thank you for helping keep our responders and community safe during severe weather conditions.

A winter storm is expected to impact our area this weekend, with wintry precipitation likely beginning Saturday and continuing into Sunday. Snow, Sleet and Freezing Rain could lead to hazardous travel, especially Saturday night. While exact amounts are still uncertain, confidence is increasing in impactful winter weather. Now is the time to finish preparations, plan for potential travel disruptions, and stay up to date with the latest forecast through the weekend. Weather.gov/rah/winter

❄️We are keeping a close eye on the potential for snow in central NC this weekend. Looking at over a hundred computer models, some show measurable snow, while others are mostly dry, and timing difference are large. It's too soon to be able to give much detail, so stay tuned and check out weather.gov for updates!
