Public Notice: Cellular Service Disruption in Esmeralda County

Esmeralda County is currently experiencing service disruptions affecting multiple cellular carriers in portions of the county.

The ECFD/DEM are aware of the situation and are actively coordinating with cellular providers and state partners. Requests have been made for temporary Cellular on Wheels (COW) units to help restore limited coverage and provide backup communication capabilities.

Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly and use alternative communication methods if available. In the event of an emergency, please continue to dial 911—emergency services are aware of the issue and have contingency measures in place.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Last week, Esmeralda County received a shelter trailer from the American Red Cross in coordination with the Esmeralda County Fire District. The trailer is stocked with essential supplies to support shelter operations if we need to open a shelter within the county during an emergency. It is also available to assist neighboring counties as part of regional mutual aid when shelter support is needed.

-Preparedness Information-

The Esmeralda County Board of Commissioners, in partnership with the Esmeralda County Fire Protection District and Emergency Management, encourages all residents to review the emergency preparedness resources provided by the Nevada State Office of Emergency Management.

Living in a frontier county means that during certain emergencies—including severe weather, wildfires, extended power outages, earthquakes, or other incidents—residents may need to be prepared to be self-sufficient for a period of time until emergency services can reach all areas of the county. Preparing ahead of time is one of the most important steps individuals and families can take to protect themselves and their neighbors.

We encourage every household to take a few minutes to review the preparedness information available through the Nevada State Office of Emergency Management. These resources provide helpful guidance on creating emergency plans, assembling emergency supply kits, understanding evacuation procedures, and staying informed during emergencies.

At the same time, local preparedness efforts within Esmeralda County are also being assessed and strengthened through ongoing planning and preparation by county leadership, emergency management, and public safety partners to ensure we are as ready as possible to respond to emergencies affecting our communities. Please review the following preparedness resources: https://www.oem.nv.gov/plan-ahead-nevada-preparedness-information/

Being informed and prepared strengthens the safety and resilience of our entire county. We appreciate the continued cooperation of our residents in helping make Esmeralda County a safer place to live.

If you have questions regarding emergency preparedness in Esmeralda County, please contact the Esmeralda County Fire Protection District or the Department of Emergency Management.
