When policy starts sounding like a punchline, it usually means the explanation has outrun the facts. At some point, even the most patient listener has to ask whether this is foreign policy or improv night at a half empty theater. A “very big present,” wrapped in secrecy, tied to the Strait of Hormuz, and somehow too valuable to describe,\?!? LOL This isn’t how serious negotiations sound. This is how someone talks when the details don’t exist but the spotlight does. What makes it almost comedic is the collision with reality that Iran steps up and says no conversation even happened - Don the Neo-CON is negotiating with himself.
The now-defunct JCPOA. The “deal” the Obama administration was struck with Iran, co-signed by the U.S., Russia, China, the U.K., France, Germany and the E.U.
Part of the agreement was that we would unfreeze billions of dollars worth of Iranian assets once they were in compliance. It was their money, and we were offering it back to them contingent on them abiding by the terms of the JCPOA, which according to all parties, including the International Atomic Energy Agency, they did.
So in 2016, the Obama administration released $6 billion in frozen assets back to the Iranians, along with a prisoner exchange which was also a part of the deal. It was a piecemeal arrangement: You do this, we’ll do that, pending confirmation of each step.
But what happened here in the United States when Obama freed up that first $6 billion?
The Republicans went absolutely BERSERK. Fox News reported daily: “Obama Pays Ayatollah not to Build Nukes!” Never mind that it was their money, and that they were in compliance with the agreement. But damn… that $6 billion! SIX BILLION!! How could he?
Fast-forward to March 21st, 2026: Donald Trump, freaked out over the political ramifications of rising gas prices due to his war with Iran, eases sanctions on Iranian oil; yes, on IRANIAN OIL, handing them a tidy $14 billion in much appreciated greenbacks, which they will surely use to continue to fight American and Israeli forces.
Obama freed up THEIR $6 billion to get them to abandon nukes, Fox goes bonkers. 🤯
Outrage from Sean Hannity, Jesse Watters and Laura Ingraham over Trump giving them $14 billion?
