“On Wednesday, the Healey administration announced that the Seaport Economic Council was awarding more than $16.7 million to 21 projects that “contribute to job and economic growth” while preparing coastal communities for the impact of rising seas levels and climate change.

The biggest award was $2.6 million for improvements to Gloucester’s St. Peter’s Landing and Marina, a nexus between the seaport’s tourism economy and its traditional fishing industry economy.

Mayor Paul Lundberg said the money will be used to repair the superstructure of St. Peter’s Wharf, to replace landside pilings, topside planking, the seawall interface and dockage. The city’s HarborWalk goes over the wharf, and is home to St. Peter’s Marina, where about a dozen lobster boats dock.

“The nice thing about this is it about both commercial and recreational boating,” Mayor Paul Lundberg said. “It’s a nice balance between marine and visitors.”

Thank you for your service, and enjoy your well-deserved retirement!

The Gloucester Firefighters would like to congratulate Brother Matteo LoGrande, Acting Deputy Chief, on nearly 40 years of dedicated service to the City of Gloucester. In addition to a distinguished firefighting career, Brother Matteo served for many years as Secretary/Treasurer of Local 762, E board member and as a longtime member of the negotiating committee, including work on our most recent agreement this past summer.
The LoGrande name continues to carry strong within the Gloucester Fire Department, with his brother Tom LoGrande, Vice President of Local 762, and his nephew Sam LoGrande proudly serving alongside him. We wish you a long, healthy, happy retirement!

This weekend, Gloucester lost a wonderful man.

Jonathan Pope embodied public service done right—quietly, thoughtfully, and always with the community first. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a steady, trusted presence in Gloucester for decades.

Jonathan may well have been Gloucester’s longest-serving public servant. His years of leadership on the School Committee, including as Chair, helped shape generations of students and strengthen our public schools when it mattered most. When I became Council President, Jonathan was serving as School Chair, and I deeply valued his wisdom, partnership, and institutional knowledge. We also worked side-by-side on the successful Vote Yes for Gloucester Schools campaign—because Jonathan believed in backing up words with action.

Outside City Hall, Jonathan was a proud small business owner, founding Pope Cabinets in 1983. His craftsmanship lives on across Cape Ann in homes, businesses, and public spaces. He also gave generously to our community through organizations like the Gloucester Education Foundation, always focused on investing in our kids and our future.

Jonathan never sought recognition. He simply showed up, did the work, and made things better.

I’m grateful Mayor V***a has lowered City flags to half-staff to honor Jonathan’s memory ahead of next week’s inauguration—a fitting tribute to a life defined by service, integrity, and love for Gloucester.

Our thoughts are with the Pope family. Jonathan leaves behind a lasting legacy—and a city that is better because of him.

Thank you, Jonathan. Rest well. (Photo credit: Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association)

The 25th annual Lobster Trap Tree was lit tonight at its home in Solomon Jacobs Park on Gloucester Harbor- a unique holiday icon in a unique place in our City. Gloucester Fire Department ladder truck crowned the Tree with its star, the lobster bouy ornaments organized by Art Haven gave the tree its singular festive appearance, and Senator Tarr with the help of Santa and Mrs. Claus led the countdown to the lighting.

The incredible volunteers who constructed the tree have given a very special gift to our Community. Several hundred folks, mostly our young people who let their parents come along, cheered at this special holiday beacon looking out over our harbor. A wonderful night.
