Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 4, is Election Day. I'm running for my fourth term on the Gloucester School Committee and I hope my work these past six years has earned your vote.

It's hard to believe, but my first term on the School Committee was our Covid years -- and I couldn't have been prouder to be part of a School District that banded together to support our students. Not only did GPS open in person that Fall of 2020, Gloucester teachers were piloting new curriculum while managing a pandemic. They were true superheroes.

Since then, I founded a new subcommittee, the Ad Hoc Communications Subcommittee, to improve communications between the School Committee and the community. We created a SC page, carefully following Open Meeting laws, as a way to communicate with the broader Gloucester community, and provided feedback as the Superintendent updated the website. We continue to look for ways to improve communication.

As Chair of the Programs Subcommittee, I have worked on important new policies on attendance, School Choice, electronic devices, and the CVTE exploration programs, among many others. I've continued to carefully examine our budgets, and to listen to the results of new curriculum chosen by Gloucester teachers. I've advocated for the new East Veteran's Elementary school, and playgrounds at Beeman and Plum Cove.

I've carefully followed our new Special Education planning, and am proud that we are developing new programs at EVS, West Parish and Beeman that will allow more students to be educated in their home district.

Our CVTE program at GHS is another source of pride, with updated facilities for several shops and the new Medical Assisting Program just starting this year.

This term I will continue to focus on improving learning and achievement at GPS. The Committee received a promising update from O'Maley Innovation Middle School staff in October. With new curriculum and programming there, I'm hopeful that we will finally see improved learning and test scores. Both as a parent and a Committee member, the quality of our schools is of upmost importance to me.

And, the quality of our schools is not just the academic learning but the sense of safety and belonging. We've made huge strides in our social emotional programming and in working with some of the behavior issues that have become more acute since Covid. Providing additional Professional Development to teachers and paras was and is a major priority for me. Our contracts outline this and we're seeing the positive effects in school every day.

Everything we do on the School Committee is as a team -- and our team is all of Gloucester Public Schools, including school families and the greater community.

There's a lot of work still to do in Gloucester Public Schools. I'm #2 on the ballot. I would appreciate your vote.

Get certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid! I did this training last spring, and it was invaluable in teaching me to look for the various signs of mental health issues. Anyone who is in contact with tweens, teens, even young adults is encouraged to apply. It's free!

I look forward to continuing to work to improve student learning and engagement, communicate about the extraordinary accomplishments of our students, teachers, staff and community and manage our policies and our budget effectively, and with compassion.
