Big news! 🥳 Thanks to the incredible hard work of our interns and volunteers, we officially hit our summer goal of 100,000 digitized files!
Plus, we have even more help on the way:📦 The Boston Public Library picked up seven large banker boxes of documents to digitize for us!🌐 These will hopefully be available after the holidays via Digital Commonwealth.

How many of these did you earn? 👀

Some of you know the Museum very well, from scanning the QR codes and planning ahead, to knowing which chairs are actually artifacts and leaving the parking stress behind with the free CATA shuttle.

So, which award are you claiming?

Drop the number of ribbons you earned in the comments, and if you got all six... we’re impressed.

Yes, people actually lived here.
Our founder, John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife made this extraordinary place their home long before it became the Museum you visit today. But from the very beginning, he was building with something larger in mind, and his will ultimately ensured that the home, collections, and stories he assembled here would be preserved and shared with the public.

Today, we get to wander these same magnificent halls, surrounded by the art, architecture, inventions, and history he chose to bring together under one roof.

It was a home, but it was always meant to become something more.

A look back at opening night for “Brave-Too-Much”: The Legend of John Coffee Hays! 🤠

One of our favorite parts of opening a new exhibition is getting to share the stories behind it. Guests at our opening reception heard directly from Curatorial Director John Leysath, who shared details, research, and behind-the-scenes insight that you simply won’t find on the exhibition labels.

John shared that this was the most ambitious exhibition he has put together so far, and after spending so much time researching John Coffee Hays, the great-uncle and namesake of our founder John Hays Hammond Jr., he came away with quite a story to tell. In John’s words, Hays really does seem to have been an American hero in the truest sense, with a life that took him from the Texas Rangers and the Mexican-American War to the California Gold Rush and the founding of early California communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for opening night and helped us welcome this fascinating new chapter of Hammond family history to the Museum!

“Brave-Too-Much” is now open, so come explore the exhibition, follow Hays’s adventures for yourself, and discover why a legendary Texas Ranger has a place in the story of a castle on the coast of Gloucester. www.hammondcastle.org

Not quite… The closest Hammond came was in 1951, when he worked with psychic medium Eileen Garrett and physician and parapsychologist Andrija Puharich on experiments using a Faraday cage to investigate ESP and whether it relied on electromagnetic waves.
Our founder was primarily an inventor and engineer, so his experiments were much more about technology, radio waves, and communication than bringing anything back to life. 👻🔬

Everyone has a favorite spot at the Museum, and it varies for each of us. Beth Welin, our Director of Collections, shares her favorite spot: Irene’s Balcony. This outdoor space is accessed only through Irene’s bedroom suite and is not open to the public, as the bedrooms were never intended for public access.

What is your favorite spot at the Museum?
