We saw some rain in town recently, but not enough to counteract the extremely dry season we've had.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has drought warnings in place for the entire commonwealth right now, including Gloucester. They say Virginia is experiencing its worst drought in 20 years.

The warning for our area is meant to keep people aware of climate conditions, and encourage voluntary water conservation.

Here's what you need to know:

🔸 There are increased fire risks.

🔸 Soil moisture conditions are much below normal statewide, and groundwater levels have declined.

🔸 Agricultural impacts are widespread throughout Virginia (farmers may become eligible for Farm Service Agency emergency loans).

You can track drought conditions on the DEQ website: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/water/water-quantity/drought

Individual private well users (particularly those who rely on shallow wells) benefit most from conserving water early. Here are some tips to conserve water at your home:

💧 Identify and fix (or report) leaks!

💧 Sweep driveways, sidewalks and steps rather than hosing them off.

💧 Wash the car with water from a bucket, rather than a running hose.

💧 Showers use less water than baths, as long as you keep them brief!

💧 Make sure your dishwasher is fully loaded before each use.

💧 Turn the tap off while shaving or brushing your teeth.

An Important Reminder…

New, larger "No Thru Trucks" signs have been placed at both ends of Main Street. The historic downtown and court circle are too tight for large trucks, and local authorities strictly enforce this to prevent wide-load trailers from getting stuck.

Best Routes for Heavy Vehicles:

Bypass Main Street: Use Route 17 to travel around the Gloucester Courthouse area safely.

Local Deliveries: Commercial drivers with actual business on Main Street (loading/unloading) are permitted, but passing straight through is not allowed.

A Community Film Project Honoring the Arrival of the Declaration of Independence in Gloucester

According to a letter written by Virginia Governor John Page on July 20, 1776, news of the Declaration of Independence had likely reached Gloucester by that time — or shortly thereafter — carrying with it the words that would forever change a nation.

To commemorate this historic moment, Gloucester County is creating “Voices of Independence,” a community film project that brings the Declaration to life through the voices of the people of Gloucester today.

We are seeking community members of all ages to volunteer to read selected passages from the Declaration of Independence on camera in Gloucester’s historic Court Circle.

Location: Historic Court Circle, Gloucester, VA
Filming Dates: May 26 or May 28 1-2PM
No acting experience necessary!

Participants will help honor Gloucester’s connection to this pivotal moment in American history while preserving the enduring power of the Declaration’s words for future generations. Whether you read a single sentence or a full passage, your voice can become part of this meaningful community tribute.

May is Building Safety Month!

Gloucester County recognizes the important role building safety plays in protecting our homes, businesses, schools, and community spaces.

Building codes, permits, and inspections help ensure structures are safe, resilient, and built to last — especially during severe weather and emergencies.

Thank you to our Building Inspections staff and community partners for helping keep Gloucester County safe every day.

Folks, it's winding up to be a scorcher. Forecasts show it could be 95 degrees this afternoon. Please take care of yourselves, and your pets!

Here are some things to think about for your animals, when it's this hot outside:

🚗 NEVER leave an animal in a hot car. Not even if it’s just for a moment. Not even if the windows are cracked. Not even if you're parked in the shade. A car can jump 30 degrees in 20 minutes.

🐕‍🦺 Under local law, if an animal is tethered outside when it's above 85 degrees, they MUST have adequate shade/shelter and clean drinking water (of an appropriate temperature). If not, you could face animal cruelty charges.

☀️ Be careful walking dogs on pavement. Their paws can burn in less than a minute! A good test is to hold your hand against the surface. If you can't hold it there for seven seconds (without injury), it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Stay cool, Gloucester. We want everyone to be able to enjoy summer safely.
