To my fellow residents, friends, and neighbors:

As my time as your Mayor comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the immense privilege it has been to serve the community that raised me. This office is a temporary stewardship, and as I get ready to return to the ranks of private citizenship, I want to share a few final thoughts on the progress we have made together and the bright future that lies ahead for our city.

A Foundation for the Future:
Over the course of this administration, our focus was never just on the challenges of the day, but on building a foundation that would last for generations. Together, we navigated the complexities of post-pandemic recovery, leveraging ARPA funding to inject critical dollars into our infrastructure, local non-profits, and the small businesses that form the backbone of our economy.

We moved forward with the East Gloucester and Veterans Memorial Elementary school project, a long-term investment in our children’s potential. We also remained steadfast in our support of the working waterfront, ensuring that our historic fishing industry and our commitment to climate resiliency remained at the forefront of our maritime policy. These achievements are not mine alone; they are the result of a community that refuses to stand still.

Gratitude to Our City Workforce:
I want to take this opportunity to once again thank the staff here at the City of Gloucester. The dedication of our public servants—from the DPW and public safety departments to the staff at City Hall and our schools—is what keeps this city running. Their commitment to excellence, often behind the scenes, is the engine of our progress. It has been an honor to work alongside the entire team here at the city.

Looking Ahead:
As a new term begins, I offer my sincere encouragement to the incoming members of the Gloucester City Council and the School Committee. The responsibility of governance is heavy, but I have complete confidence in your ability to serve with integrity and a focus on the common good.

Furthermore, I want to express my full and unwavering support for Mayor-elect Paul Lundberg. Paul is a dedicated leader who possesses the experience and the vision necessary to guide Gloucester through its next chapter. I am committed to a seamless transition and ask all residents to join me in supporting his administration as they work to ensure the continued prosperity of our city.

Closing:
Gloucester is more than a city; it is a family bound by history, harbor, and a shared sense of pride. Serving as your Mayor has been the greatest honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, your feedback, and your passion for this place we call home.

I look forward to seeing you all around town—on the boulevard, grabbing a bite to eat, and in the neighborhoods that make Gloucester the best place on earth.

With deep gratitude,

Greg V***a
Mayor of Gloucester

‼️The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will perform critical steel repairs on the Blynman Canal Drawbridge beginning Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

🚜 The work will require temporary traffic shifts and extended closures of the canal to marine traffic during the repairs. These repairs are necessary to maintain the safe and reliable operation of the bridge.

🚧 Repair work will proceed in two stages. Throughout both stages, Western Avenue will be alternating one-way traffic across the bridge, managed by temporary traffic signals.

➡️ Stage one will begin the night of Tuesday, January 6, with a work zone established on the westbound side of the bridge. Pedestrians will be detoured to the eastbound sidewalk. During this stage, scheduled drawbridge openings for marine traffic are anticipated on select workdays at 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Vessels are advised to coordinate crossings at these times with the bridge operator at least 24 hours in advance.

➡️ Stage two, anticipated to begin in mid-February, will shift the work zone to the eastbound side of the bridge and redirect pedestrians to the westbound sidewalk. In stage 2, work will occur across the center span, preventing drawbridge operation and requiring a full closure of the canal to marine traffic. A continuous full canal closure is anticipated to last approximately four weeks, from mid-February through mid-March. This closure has been coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Gloucester Harbormaster and is scheduled during a low-use period of the year.

⏰ Work will occur seven days per week, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during both stages.

🚗 Advanced signage for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists will be posted from west of Essex Avenue to east of Centennial Avenue. Parking will be prohibited adjacent to work zones between the bridge and Essex Avenue. Additional details regarding impacts to traffic and marine vessels will be announced in advance as required.

⚠️ Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

📆The schedule for this work is weather‑dependent and subject to change without notice.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in City Hall’s door decorating contest, and to all of our City departments who participated and helped bring some extra cheer to the building.

The City Clerk’s Office took the voting and election process very seriously, even enlisting the Board of Registrars and dedicated volunteers to assist with counting the ballots.

I look forward to announcing the popular vote winner tomorrow!

Great turnout and energy at the The Lobster Trap Tree Lighting this past weekend, especially as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of this Gloucester tradition!

This has always been one of my favorite holiday events, and it’s been especially meaningful to take part in it as Mayor over the past four years.

Thank you to the volunteers, organizers, and community partners who put in the time to make this event happen every year. I was also glad to recognize the organizers and volunteers with Kindness Is the Flag We All Reach For mugs as a small thank-you for the time and effort they give to this tradition.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support the Lobster Trap Tree and keep it going.

I was glad to attend The Cornerstone Creative’s first open house and holiday market fundraiser this past weekend.

Cornerstone Creative is doing great work mentoring young people through hands-on woodworking, helping them build skills, confidence, and community. It was nice to tour their space and see the projects created by their students.

Thank you to the staff, mentors, volunteers, and everyone who came out to support their work.

💧 Water Service Line Update: December 16, 2025💧

As part of the EPA’s updated Lead and Copper Rule requirements, the City of Gloucester has been actively working to identify the materials used in water service lines throughout the community. Our Water Compliance Office and Public Utility Division have been reviewing system records, with support from an engineering firm specializing in this work, to develop a complete service line inventory.

📬 What to Expect:
➡️ If your property has been identified as having a lead or galvanized water service, you will receive a letter from the City with steps you can take to reduce potential exposure risks.
➡️ If we were unable to determine your service line material, you will receive a letter requesting your help in identifying it.
➡️ No letter? That’s good news — it means no lead or galvanized service line was identified, and no action is needed.

🔧 This ongoing work supports regulatory compliance and the City’s long-term goal of identifying and removing any remaining lead or galvanized service lines.
