🚨 MEMORIAL DAY SIRENS AROUND GLENWOOD
The B Shift of the Glenwood Professional Firefighters Local 5557 had an extremely busy Memorial Day, running a total of NINE calls in a single shift.
➡️ 8 medical calls
➡️ 1 grass fire
Twice during the shift, another emergency call came in while crews were already responding to an active incident:
⚠️ 3 calls in just 34 minutes
0916 Medical
0938 Medical
0940 Medical
⚠️ 4 calls in 1 hour and 42 minutes
1808 Medical
1849 Medical
1918 Medical
1950 Medical
With LIMITED staffing, this is becoming unsustainable.
Yesterday’s staffing consisted of only TWO on-duty firefighter/paramedics.
Because of overlapping emergencies, we relied heavily on Fire Chief Gray, 2 volunteers, and 1 off-duty personnel to keep serving the community.
The reality is this:
🚑 Most medical calls take approximately 90 minutes from dispatch until crews return to Glenwood due to transport times to hospitals in Bellevue, Council Bluffs, and Omaha.
🚒 The Glenwood Fire Department currently operates with ONLY 7 full-time firefighters across 3 shifts. An 8th firefighter is expected to be hired after July 1, 2026 — but that is still not enough to safely meet our call volume 1500 calls a year.
Our firefighters are doing everything they can, but the current staffing model is failing to keep up with demand.
This is not about convenience. This is about PUBLIC SAFETY.
Without an increase in full-time Firefighter EMTs and Firefighter Paramedics, there may come a time when someone calls 911 and no one is immediately available to respond.
We urge residents to contact the City of Glenwood Administrator, Mayor and City Council members and voice your concerns about fire departments current staffing levels.
