Happy Thanksgiving from the Mills County Sheriff's Office! As we head into the holiday week, gathering with friends and family to give thanks, we also want to remind our community to stay safe on the roads this holiday season. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and your safety is our top priority!
Here are some important facts to keep in mind before you hit the road:
• On average, every 50 minutes a passenger vehicle occupant not wearing a seat belt dies in a traffic crash.
• In 2023, 10,484 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes were not wearing seat belts.
• The national estimate of seat belt use during the day by adult front-seat passengers in 2024 was 91.2%.
• In 2023, more unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants died in traffic crashes at night (5,779) than during the day (4,600).
• In 2023, 56% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts.
• Among young adults 18-34 killed while riding in passenger vehicles in 2023, more than half (60%) were completely unrestrained. One of the highest percentages for all age groups.
• Men make up the majority of those killed in traffic crashes. Men are also overrepresented in unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities with 53% of men and 41% of women dying without a seat belt in 2023.
Seat belts save lives — day or night, short trip or long trip, holiday or not.
This Thanksgiving, please:
✔ Buckle up every time
✔ Encourage your loved ones to do the same
✔ Drive sober
✔ Stay alert and patient on crowded roads
From our family to yours, have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
