Today John (Jack) Pfeifer - Assistant County Attorney and part-time Mock Trial Judge - had the pleasure of presiding over the Classical Conversations Homeschool Communities from Council Bluffs and Bellevue, NE - 2026 Mock Trial Competition. Many of the offices of Mills County have received complaints of unsatisfactory road and travel conditions in Mills County due to construction projects and fall harvest that are causing heavy truck traffic in various locations throughout the county. The Mills County Sheriff's Office, the Engineer’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office and Building and Zoning Department are working with the private partners of the construction sites to attempt to alleviate some of the concerns that have been raised by the citizens of Mills County. All parties involved agree that safety is the utmost priority and we will continue to work towards that goal.

As Sheriff, I would remind you to use caution when road, weather and traffic conditions dictate. Remember to slow down, allow yourself extra time to reach your destination and be mindful of traffic around you.

The Mills County Attorney’s Office condemns in the strongest possible terms the actions that resulted in the tragic deaths of two members of the Iowa National Guard.

These servicemembers answered the call to serve our state and our nation. Their loss is profound and deeply felt by their families, their fellow Guardsmen, and the people of Iowa. Any act of violence that claims the lives of those who serve undermines the safety of our communities and offends the values we are sworn to uphold.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the fallen Guardsmen and to the entire Iowa National Guard community. We honor their service and sacrifice.

Sgt. Edgar B. Torrestovar, 25, of Grimes, Iowa and Sgt. William N. Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa and the remaining three injured - our office will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers through this holiday season and beyond.
