Hanging Lake

Hanging Lake A detailed guide to hiking Hanging Lake:
http://www.dayhikesneardenver.com/hanging-lake-colorado/ The exit 125 is only accessible from Eastbound I-70.
(1837)

Hidden within the steep walls of Glenwood Canyon on Interstate 70 about 150 miles west of Denver and 7 miles east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado lies a popular and relatively easy hike up a side canyon to a beautiful lake and two waterfalls. Directions
From I-70, take exit 125 to the Hanging Lake Rest Area. For westbound travelers, exit at milepost 21 and turn around going east to the Hanging Lake

exit. The off-ramp leads right into a parking lot. This area can be crowded during the summer. Parking is limited. From the parking area walk east along the paved trail. After a couple of hundred yards you will see a trail leading off to the left and marked as the trail for Hanging Lake. Take this trail all the way to the lake. The trail is a little steep and rocky, so though it is only 1 mile to the lake it may take you a little time. This canyon is beautiful though, so stop every once in a while to catch your breath and look around. The last 100 yards to the lake is steep up a cliff side with a railing on the outside. Upon reaching the lake you will find a boardwalk, please stay on this board walk as the environment at Hanging Lake is extremely fragile. The hike requires 1-2 hours round trip and is rated difficult by the park service, you'll find benches along the way to catch your breath and take in the scenery.

This will be the second year for the online reservation system. It’ll cost $12 for a permit and shuttle ride from the Hanging Lake Welcome Center in Glenwood Springs to the trailhead off Interstate 70. If you’d rather opt to bike to the trail, then the charge is $10.

A reservation is required to visit Hanging Lake via independent vehicle, hiking or biking. Forest Service Rangers and/or staff patrol the trail and parking area to ensure visitors have obtained a day pass. Be prepared to present your permit to an authorized agent or Forest Service Officer upon request.

In the meantime, anyone with information about the vandalism at the park last week should contact the Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District at 970-827-5715.

Park rangers say graffiti found along the Hanging Lake Trail was so fresh you “could still smell the spray paint.”
