Our friends at Pittsburgh Action Against R**e (PAAR) are hosting a new support group this month! Here are the details:

"Cultivating Strength is PAAR’s psychoeducational support group for adult survivors of sexual trauma — a space to learn, reflect, connect and build skills that can support healing beyond the group.

This fall, we’re focusing on Emotional Intelligence — recognizing and understanding our emotions, learning how to manage them, and becoming more aware of the emotions of those around us.

Over four virtual sessions, participants will explore self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills and how each can support personal well-being and healthier relationships.

💛 WHO: Adults ages 18+ who have experienced any type of sexual trauma
💻 WHERE: Virtual
📅 WHEN: Mondays at 6 PM
September 14, 21 & 28 + October 5

Registration closes September 11, 2026. Because this group builds across the four sessions, registrations cannot be accepted after the first session begins.

Visit Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) 's Open House on Saturday, September 19th from 9 AM to 4 PM to learn about their modern wastewater treatment facility. The free event includes a family-friendly tour of the 59-acre plant and a special lab tour!

Happy National Wildlife Day! A big thank you to everyone who sent us pictures for our summer coloring contest. We received entries from kiddos as young as two, and having these pictures to brighten our office is delightful.

I’m happy to support this investment into the City that will help residents easily get outside and exercise, play and connect with their neighbors. Community spaces like our parks, trails and sports fields are key to our mental, physical and community health. These improvements will ensure that the next generation of Pittsburgh families can take advantage of these benefits for years to come!

The City of Pittsburgh has received a state grant to fund field upgrades, new water fountains and trail connectivity planning across several eastern neighborhoods.

“The first round of adequacy funding has offered a glimpse of what is possible when resources begin to match students’ needs,” said Dr. Eric Becoats, superintendent of the William Penn School District.

This is exactly what the adequacy supplement that was distributed in each of the last 3 state budgets is supposed to do-- allow our districts to hire teachers and counselors, reduce class sizes, expand access to career and tech ed, and keep other crucial learning programs funded.

“But, in order for us to maintain the success that we’ve made, sustain it, and accelerate it, we need to make sure that the continued investment is predictable, it’s long-term, and it’s sufficient for us to continue to close the gap," said Dr. Becoats.

Serving on the Basic Education Funding Commission and helping to implement a solution that is working to fairly and equitably funds our public schools is something that I'm incredibly proud of. And I look forward to continuing this work in future budgets, ensuring that our students continue to succeed.

New “adequacy funding” is helping Pennsylvania’s public schools do more. But the state’s tax credit “voucher” programs for private schools keep growing, redirecting money away from the majority of students.
