It was a beautiful morning at Twin Mounds Pioneer Cemetery yesterday. The cemetery was mowed and the w**deating made it appear especially clean. James Lomax, Steve Menasco, and Danny Griffith provided music in the shade. It'd have been nice to see more people. Thanks to Mike Buckendorf, Lynn Womack, Wesley Parks and family, my lifelong friend, Steve Ball, my daughter, Carla Horner Colbert, her son and my oldest grandson, Jade Colbert, Colleen Farr Nix, John Lafortune, and Mr. Craig, and my wife, Martina, and my sister, Barbara, for coming out.

I finished the Twin Mounds Pioneer Cemetery Association newsletter yesterday, which was Friday, April 17, 2026. Please, read the newsletter below and respond, if you don't need a letter mailed to you. For those who are on the mailing list, it would save me a good bit of money and time if you feel sufficiently informed and won't require the same letter to be mailed to you. I appreciate your assistance. Thanks, and I hope to see you over Memorial Day weekend, especially on Monday, May 25th, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

We're set up for the interment this afternoon around 2:00 p.m. The funeral home didn't tell me when the vault company was arriving. Manny, the vault company employee, called me around 10:30 this morning. Fortunately, he and I worked together burying David Barnhart last year. I pulled on my boots and beat it out to the cemetery. Ted Smith and I will complete the burial, and I'll finish raking and cleaning up before 5:00 p.m. today. Hoping the rain holds off.

I'll be at Twin Mounds Pioneer Cemetery this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon as we have a burial taking place in an existing plot tomorrow afternoon. If I don't answer my phone or messages, I'm either helping Ted Smith open or close the grave. With the interment scheduled for approximately 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 14th, 2026, it'll take me until at least 4:00 p.m. to get the grave filled and then shovel and rake the site so that the grave is crowned and we can mow around it. The historical marker is the Neafus plot. Unfortunately, when the sign was printed, the name was misspelled as 'Neasus.'

Trimmed up the two family plots today ahead of Easter Sunday. Cleaned up a couple of other sites adjacent to our plot. Another fellow, Wesley Parks, met me there and worked on the Neafus plot. The cemetery looks nice, but, as always, some work tidying individual plots would be a big help.
Nancy and I have talked about burial plots and fees. As long as there's a space in a family plot, there's no charge. The other side of that coin is there are no additional plots for sale. We have a man who digs graves for us at Twin Mounds Pioneer Cemetery. His fee last year was between $400.00-500.00, and I wouldn't expect his fee to decrease what with fuel prices and everything else trending upwards.
One thing I want to address is the closing of a grave, and, more specifically, shoveling and raking the grave site so that it's smoothed out and can be mowed. I am going to propose at our annual meeting on Memorial Day Monday, May 26, 2026, at 10:00 a. m. that a fee of at least $100.00 be charged to clean up and put the grave site in good condition to be mowed. A family can do it themselves, and Nancy or I will open the gate to let you in to do the work. However, we need it done in a timely manner. It's best done immeditely after closing the grave. Waiting allows the clay to harden like rocks. Done right, it takes up to three hours to get the grave filled, the excess soil moved, the burial site raked and mounded up, and all the area around the grave in condition to mow.
While I'm at it, mowing season is upon us, and some donations that were promised last year haven't shown up yet. Please, make your check out to Twin Mounds Pioneer Cemetery Association. The mailing address is 16701 S. 33rd West Avenue, Glenpool, OK 74033. Thanks for any financial or labor support that you can provide.

We buried a fellow today in the Barnhart plot. It's in an existing plot with space, otherwise, there are no new burials allowed due to so many unmarked graves. Since I had to be there before 7:30 a.m. this morning, I took the w**d eater and my blower and cleaned up our two family plots. We don't have funds to w**d eat regularly, so things get kind of shabby looking. I'm posting some before and after photos of our plots as well as the latest grave site.
This is a suggestion. Rather than have a work day that might not be convenient for folks, if anyone wants to come out and clean up, mow, w**d eat, or use a blower on their plot or any other thing that might improve the looks of things, the cemetery is open during daylight hours. Neither Nancy or I will object to anyone helping maintain the appearance of the resting place of so many pioneers. We do the best we can with what we have, but nothing would be better than for people to come out and work for a day. It makes a difference, as you can see from the looks of my family's two plots. I hope some of the families of those buried out here will invest some time and sweat into keeping up the place.

I had a gentleman stop at the cemetery last Friday looking for the grave of a long-deceased relative. I told him that I would check what records I have to see if I could find the boy, but no luck. On occasion, I have been able to help people find a grave, but, since there were so many people buried with impermanent markers and so much theft and vandalism of existing headstones prior to getting the cemetery fenced in, it's a hit-and-miss proposition. One man from Lubbock, Texas contacted me last year about a headstone he'd found in the garage of a house into which he'd recently moved. I checked the name against the list of identified graves, and, believe it or not, I found the name. Next time I'm in Lubbock, I will try to retrieve the stone and return it to its rightful place.

I've been too busy this summer with a home improvement project to praise some people who worked cleaning and improving the cemetery. Thanks to my cousins Patricia Hazelwood and Sheila Helen, as well as Bill, who put in several hours working in the summer heat and humidity. Your work shows, and your investment of time and sweat is deeply appreciated.
I also want to thank the Barnhart family for working with me to get David Barnhart buried in the Barnhart plot with his father and mother, Herb and Flossie Barnhart. Thanks to David Anderson and Mary Barnhart for your prompt communication as the weather has conspired against us necessitating the postponement of the burial for up to a week. Thanks to Traditions Funeral Service in Kellyville for their flexibility and working with us.
