North Shore Fire/Rescue is grateful that no civilians or firefighters were badly injured during Sunday’s apartment fire in Glendale.
This incident demonstrates the critical importance of modern fire protection systems. The building’s upgraded voice evacuation fire alarm system provided occupants with immediate notification and clear instructions to evacuate, while helping first responders quickly identify the location of the emergency.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered a significant fire extending from multiple balconies into the attic space of a 162-unit apartment building. The fire alarm system was already alerting occupants, allowing residents to begin evacuating before firefighters entered the building.
Approximately 70 firefighters from North Shore Fire/Rescue, the Milwaukee Fire Department, and other mutual aid departments responded to the third-alarm fire. The fire was brought under control in approximately 50 minutes.
“This incident reminds us of the importance of fire alarms and smoke detectors to provide early notification to occupants of buildings when a fire occurs so occupants can quickly evacuate the building,” said Fire Chief Robert Whitaker.
Please take a moment today to ensure your smoke alarms are working and that your family knows what to do if an alarm sounds.
