Front Porch has made the difficult decision to close the Social Call program as of August 1st, 2025. This decision was not made lightly and is part of a broader effort to make sure every Front Porch program is adequately supported and sustainable for the future. Thank you to our participants, volunteers and supporters who have been part of Social Call and supported our goal of boosting connection through friendly visits and calls. If you are interested in programs that support connection, please check out our sister programs Well Connected and Well Connected Español.

From “Embracing Age: A Mindful Approach to Growing Older” by Berit Lewis. You can read the rest of the article here: https://psyche.co/guides/rather-than-fearing-getting-old-heres-how-to-embrace-it

"Ageing is often seen through a negative lens, but that perspective is far from accurate. In truth, growing older brings unique strengths—greater knowledge, deeper emotional insight, and a clearer sense of what truly matters.

Instead of fearing age, we can embrace it. Mindfulness offers a powerful tool to do just that. Just as physical exercise keeps our bodies strong, mindfulness keeps our minds resilient and focused, supporting overall wellbeing.

Focus on what matters.
Attention is your most valuable resource. Whether you’re practicing formal meditation or simply choosing where to place your mental focus, strengthening your ability to direct attention helps you concentrate on what you can do, and on what brings you joy—instead of dwelling on limitations.

Question the assumptions.
Negative beliefs about ageing are often broad, unhelpful generalisations. Challenge them by asking yourself: Is this thought or behaviour helping me live the life I want? Often, the answer will guide you toward a more constructive mindset.

Make peace with discomfort.
Growing older includes its challenges, but resisting what you can’t control adds unnecessary suffering. By accepting discomfort and broadening your perspective, you may notice that moments of joy and beauty still exist—even alongside pain.

Practice self-compassion.
When things go wrong, try replacing self-criticism with understanding. Instead of thinking, “Poor me, I’m all alone,” shift to “This is part of being human.” That simple change transforms suffering into a shared human experience, creating connection rather than isolation.

Live with a beginner’s mind.
No matter your age, every moment offers a chance to start fresh. Approach life with curiosity and openness, just as a beginner would. This mindset keeps you present, adaptable, and open to continued growth.

Ageing isn’t something to fear—it’s something to explore. With awareness, compassion, and intention, you can grow into each new stage of life with grace and purpose."

Whether you are 20 or 90, each moment of life presents an opportunity to focus on what really matters to you

A lot of Americans see aging as something negative—like getting weaker or becoming dependent—but that mindset is deeply built into our culture, from birthday cards to anti-aging ads. Research shows even older people don’t like to think of themselves as “old,” and many of us have unconscious bias against aging. A group of organizations set out to change that by introducing a new way to think about aging: as “building momentum,” where experience and wisdom help people keep growing and making a difference. This simple shift in language helps people feel more positive about aging and can reduce age-based bias. If we change how we talk about aging, we can change how we think about it—and ultimately how society treats older adults.
