Friends of the Glen Rose Bird Sanctuary

Friends of the Glen Rose Bird Sanctuary Caretakers of the Glen Rose Bird Sanctuary. This is a group for birders and environmental enthusiasts in the Glen Rose area.

The group will meet four times per year for bird sanctuary upkeep. Members take turns, one month at a time, keeping the bird feeders full. Please contact us here if you notice feeders empty. The Glen Rose Bird Club was founded in 1991 by Marion and Victor Czaja shortly after their arrival to Glen Rose following the appointment of Marion as the Superintendent of Glen Rose Public Schools. During the

ir three year residence in Glen Rose, the club met at their home. Victor, a retired education administrator, devoted much of his spare time to scouring Somervell County for a comprehensive list of bird species, both resident and migratory. The Czajas, as former teachers at an English language school in Columbia, had honed their bird watching skills in a country with perhaps the greatest wealth of birds (around 2,000 species. Meetings of the Bird Club were devoted to developing the skills of attendees in the identification and the recognition of birds seen locally and the mechanics of creating bird-friendly habitats. Occasional trips to educate the membership are taken both within and beyond the county. The Glen Rose Bird Club is also responsible for the care and up keep of the Glen Rose Bird Sanctuary located at 107 SW Barnard Street in Historic Downtown.

It’s time to start feeding the birds again. The problem is that we don’t have a secure seed storage container. Varmits destroyed the last one. Anyone have a container to donate ? Please message Judith D’Amico or reply on here.

Thanks to Lynn Horvat for taking care of the birds in July. She talked to an exterminator who told her that all the buildings near the bird sanctuary on both sides of the street are having rat and raccoon problems and they all have bird seed in their nests. We decided to stop putting out bird seed for 2 months to try to break that cycle and to prevent birds from spreading diseases. The critters have also figured out how to get into our storage containers. We will have to figure out a new storage system when we resume feeding.
