D41 elections around the corner. If interested signatures due by Monday, Nov 18th to the DuPage county building at 5pm. Only need 50 signatures.

So far running are 4 people for 4 spots:
- Bob Bruno (current board member)
- Jason Loebach (current board member)
- Amy Becker (Director of D41 Kids foundation)
- Chris Martelli (former board member who resigned last year with no explanation)

Miko said he wasn’t going to run again.
No word on if Syed is running.

Lots of unanswered questions about full-day kindergarten at tonight’s D41 meeting. If you didn’t attend, you might want to attend one of the upcoming meetings (see attached).

Unanswered questions included:
1. Logistics & Transportation - how and when students are going to get to school?
2. If students will be pulled out of half-day kindergarten from their neighborhood school?
3. Before and after school programs?
4. What if more people enroll than space available?
5. Will students be grouped in classes by their home school?
6. What if the school isn't completed when planned?
7. Where are the results from the survey?

WHO APPLIED FOR THE D41 BOARD VACANCY? WHY WEREN’T THEY INTERVIEWED?

Citizens obtained this information from a community member who had to submit a FOIA for the details as D41 never shared publicly. The District could have released this information sooner, but instead delayed it until AFTER the Board took action to appoint a new board member on 9-26-23. Also, the District never notified the applicants that this information was being released as is customary.

The following nine people applied. Only the three names starred* were granted an interview.
- Asma Ali
- *Amy Becker
- *Anthony Bertani
- Matthew Coe
- Kim Grotto Howard
- *Stephen Miko
- Alison Prochaska
- Larry Scott
- Emily Sugimoto

When applicants asked Bruno for the reason they were not being interviewed, they received this canned response “After the Board completes its work on Tuesday and makes an appointment to fill the vacancy, I will provide public remarks on the selection process”. Attached is the quote from his statement on 9-26 with the Board’s reasoning on who to interview.

Citizens does not find this explanation satisfactory as by only looking at an application there was no way to assess the attributes the Board claimed they were looking for in a Board member.

Any time in recent history that interviews were held for a D41 Board vacancy, ALL candidates were granted an interview.

The Board departed from the norm to interview all candidates. Was it just to continue to control the Board 7-0 with no possibility of an alternative voice? WHY WERE OUR FELLOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS NOT EVEN GIVEN THE APPEARNACE OF A CHANGE AT REPRESENTING US?

SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH SURVEY - DEADLINE OCTOBER 2

The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education has started the process of hiring a new superintendent to replace Dr. Kaczkowski who is retiring at the end of this school year. The Board of Education has hired an executive search firm to assist them with this important task and process. The Board of Education would like your input as we begin our search for a new Superintendent to lead our district. They will use the information we gather from focus groups and this questionnaire to help create a leadership profile for our next leader.

The board voted 6-0 for Stephen Miko to fill the vacancy. Citizens will share more about all applicants later (there were 9). Regardless of the appointment, Citizens still takes issue with the process that the Board used denying all applicants an opportunity to interview.
