Rehabbing The Aerie of Glen Alpine

Rehabbing The Aerie of Glen Alpine This is the official page for The Aerie rehabilitation project in Glen Alpine, NC. Follow our progress!

In 2014, we bought this beautiful, although very neglected, home. At the time, it had no plumbing, faulty electrical work, structural problems... We could go on and on. But the house had so much potential, we could not even consider another home to purchase. Since that time, we have put countless hours into bringing the house up to modern standards for comfort and efficiency. With each new project

, the home gets better and better. Our ultimate goal is to rehab the entire structure with a focus on preservation and sustainability, so that hopefully the Aerie will stand for another 100 years or more! Follow us in our journey, share your memories of this home, and get inspired! We would love to see Burke county save more beautiful structures instead of building new ones.

We know many of our followers have been curious, amid all of the damage and destruction, The Aerie is safe. Aside from some tree damage, she faired well in the storm thanks in part to being located on a hill, being built with high quality materials, and of course sheer luck. We have held off sharing an update because we know so many people have been less fortunate. We are heart broken for all of the people who have experienced significant loss and harm. Western North Carolina is full of strong and capable people and we know it will recover, but the scars will last for generations. We are thinking of everyone affected by Helene and wishing you all healing and safety.

We’ve been collecting light fixtures as we came across them for years, and of course held on the more interesting ones that came with the house - finally time to put some of them into use! Not surprisingly, most had to be repaired or rewired

To all of our wonderful supporters,
After nearly 10 incredible years of pouring our hearts into every nook and cranny of our beloved home, the time has come for a new chapter. After deep consideration of the many changes in our lives over the past several years, we have decided it is time to put the house up for sale! We are so proud to have saved this beautiful home to be enjoyed by the next family! 😊

This journey wasn't just about renovations; it was a labor of love and an incredible learning opportunity. We always wanted to do things the right way, not just the fast or cheap way, and that required us to add a lot of tools to our tool boxes. From the caving in crawl space that is now a clean and secure storm shelter, to the beautiful original wood windows with the wiggly-paned glass that received a full facelift, and the decrepit fuel-oil heating system we replaced with a state-of-the-art heat pump run on solar power, we approached each project as if this would be our forever home. We never imagined reaching this point when we started, but life takes unexpected turns. We hope someone else will find themselves unexpectedly living in and loving this charming home known to many as The Castle.

Our goal was always to create a space filled with warmth and history. Your support and encouragement have meant the world to us throughout this process. Especially when we felt stuck and overwhelmed, it was nice to know we were working on something important to the community and not just ourselves.
We are not yet ready to say goodbye, and plan to finish up a couple of projects that we just don’t want to walk away from. We will keep you updated! We have also received so many requests over the years for tours. Our hope is to offer an open house when we are ready to list the house.

We want to express our gratitude for joining us on this incredible adventure. The memories made here will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Stay tuned! ❤️❤️❤️

New Year new porch!

This was obviously not our top priority for making the house livable, so we are so happy we made it this far in the project! We happily paid our favorite carpenter to do this work for us, because although we could have made something work, he has the skills to make it a show stopper! The pictures are in reverse chronological order. He did one side at a time. He also fixed the ceiling and then we had it painted. So happy with the end results!

Oops, the house has been undergoing some major changes and we totally dropped the ball sharing them all with you! Over the past couple of years we have been very busy and we aren’t big social media experts. But don’t think that means The Aerie hasn’t been getting plenty of love and attention! We are going to try to make up for that over the next few months. To start, here are some recent photos of our newest bathroom. This one is on the second floor. We wanted it to be unique, but a bit more neutral than the main bathroom downstairs. This bathroom is close to where the previous and only bathroom in the house was located. We reused the old tub but everything else had to go. The tub is cast iron and in good shape but still needs to be refinished. A few other finishing touches are left as well, but it’s looking like a real bathroom and not an empty space with a plywood floor! Definitely going to need a curtain! But the natural light is wonderful. And we couldn’t resist the wood ceiling!
