Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration announced that 66,085 Virginians with past felony convictions have had their civil rights restored since January, including the ability to vote, serve on a jury, run for public office and become a notary public.

Virginia remains one of only three states where people convicted of felonies are permanently disenfranchised unless their rights are restored by the governor.

As social workers, understanding policies that impact civic participation and access is an important part of staying informed and engaged in the communities we serve.
