It's officially kitten season here at the shelter, and we are getting low on supplies for their care.

Along with many of our community partners, we are up to our ears in adorable kittens! We are in need of canned kitten food for our older kittens, and we need heating pads for very young kittens.

If you are in a position to send us any of these supplies, we would greatly appreciate it! You can find them at the top of our wish list, and they will be delivered directly to the shelter: https://bit.ly/hcshelterwishlist

For any in-person donations, you can bring them to 10421 Woodman Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060. You can drop off supplies inside the lobby or leave them by the front door if you come after hours.

If you want to support us but cannot donate any supplies, please share this post! Thank you so much in advance!

Celebrity alert!

Our sweet dog, Fig, joined a kitten named Wilbur to help Furbish Thrift promote their upcoming Big Ass*tronomical Adoption Bonanza on Saturday, June 13. Fig took her role as shelter representative very seriously while visiting WTVR CBS 6 News this morning, making sure to give everyone snuggles and kisses.

Fig first came to our shelter as a stray, and our staff suspects that she may have spent a lot of time outside without much attention from people before coming under our care. Our vet estimates that she is around 3 or 4 years old, and she has had at least one litter of puppies in the past. She arrived with some scarring on her legs and chest and a small patch of fur missing on her cheek, and was initially quite shy with staff members.

Fig has blossomed at the shelter! She's an absolute cuddlebug who smiles and wiggles at every new person she meets. She's put on weight and her fur is thicker, and the missing patch of fur on her cheek has even grown back. She's a classic squatty-body who loves affection and sometimes communicates in quiet snorts. Fig is spayed and up to date on her shots, so she's ready to find a home! She's had pleasant meetings with dogs and cats — you can see her politely check out Wilbur during the news segment.

If you'd like to meet Fig, you can call our shelter at 804-727-8807 to make an appointment between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

You can meet all of our adoptable pets at our weekly Sundays at the Shelter events! The next one is this Sunday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at 10421 Woodman Road.

The Henrico County Police Animal Shelter will also be attending Furbish Thrift's adoption event with adoptable pets, alongside a bunch of our favorite community partners. Check out Wilbur and Fig talking about it on Virginia This Morning on CBS 6!

While you're enjoying the lovely weather, be mindful of ticks!

Wear long clothing, and inspect yourself and your pet after walking in grassy or wooded areas.

Preventative measures for pets are strongly encouraged, such as medicated collars, vet-prescribed pills or chewables, or topical treatments.

If you do find a tick on a person or pet, use tweezers to grab the tick as close the skin as possible, and pull the tick off with smooth, steady pressure — twisting or jerking motions could result in leaving the tick's head embedded in the skin. Monitor the area for the redness or swelling.

Here’s some gross news for you: Public Works’ environmental team has collected more than 450 ticks (three different species!) so far this year through their tick surveillance program. While ticks have been found countywide, higher concentrations have been noted in the Varina and Sandston areas.

Tick bites can cause diseases such as Lyme disease or Alpha-Gal Syndrome. To protect yourself against ticks, you can wear long pants, tuck your pants into your socks, walk in the center of trails, avoid tall grass/brush and perform tick checks regularly. This includes checking yourself, kids and any pets!

If you find a tick attached to you, it’s important to remove it promptly by grabbing it with tweezers as close to the skin as possible.

DPW monitors ticks at trap sites in Henrico parks countywide. The team is adding more tick sites to better track local tick populations and species. Learn more about ticks in Henrico by visiting https://henrico.gov/works/engineering-environmental-services/ticks-in-henrico/

We've been staying busy and so has our supply closet!

We are getting low on a few items, including dish soap and pill pockets, which we use every day.

We are also in need of wire or hard-sided crates for medium to large-sized dogs. We use the crates to safely transport pets to adoption events, vet visits and transfers other community rescue organizations. Both used and new crates are welcome!

If you are in a position to send us any supplies, we would greatly appreciate it! You can find them on our wish list, and they will be delivered directly to the shelter: https://bit.ly/hcshelterwishlist
