“Astronauts Returning From Orbit”—Led by Mrs. Holly and Mrs. Amanda, rising 2nd graders in the Summer Scholars program at Gleason School built protective contraptions to protect their eggs. After watching videos of astronauts returning from space, groups worked together to model their contraptions based on what they had observed, attempting to add 2 parachutes and a protective casing around the egg. The eggs went through 3 rounds of testing at different heights. It was a fun experiment for all!

More than 50 students in grades PreK through 5th grade participated in the 2026 Summer Scholars program and enjoyed this exciting extended learning opportunity through June 16th. Thank you to all the students, teachers, and families who participated.

Throughout the program, our “summer scholars” were thrilled to learn with LOTS of fun, educational activities! For example, students enjoyed learning about moon phases with oreos and making mini pizzas. They engineered egg capsules and dropped them from the top bleacher hoping their eggs would survive. They also created PowerPoint presentations about weather. The group ended their time together with ice cream, bubbles, kickball, and water fun! 🤩

⭐️Mark your calendars! The Bulldog Family is so excited that Gleason’s own Jade Kowalewski will be starring as Junie B. Jones in the upcoming musical at the Krider Performing Arts Center (KPAC) in Paris, Tennessee!!!⭐️

The play will be a musical based on 3 books in the Junie B. Jones series, all of which are written by Barbara Park:

1. Boss of Lunch
2. One-Man Band
3. First Grader At Last!

Junie B. is one of Jade's favorite book characters so she is extremely excited to bring that role to life. When she was in first grade, Jade chose to dress up as Junie B. Jones on "Favorite Book Character Day." As an upcoming fifth grader, Jade is thrilled to have the opportunity to now play her favorite character on stage!

Performances are Friday, July 10th at 7:00 PM and
Saturday, July 11th at 3:00 PM. You can purchase tickets online using this link.

Hope you and your family will plan to attend and support Jade! ⭐️🤩

Summer Scholars is in full swing at Gleason School! More than 50 students in grades PreK through 5th grade are participating in this exciting extended learning opportunity through June 16th. Students are thrilled to learn with LOTS of fun, educational activities!!

Just a couple of examples: Rising 2nd graders had the opportunity to make “fizzing planets” as they studied patterns in the sky, and rising kindergarteners were excited to practice their letter formation using paints.

We would like to thank Weakley County Schools and our Summer Scholars Staff for providing this opportunity for our wonderful students. Thank you to Mrs. Doris Owen and exchange student Maya Bouazra for volunteering their time to help students make and decorate cookies like the planets they’ve been learning about. We would also like to thank our parents for allowing your children to participate in our program.😊⭐️

To wrap up Gleason School’s KIDS CLUB for the year, our plans were all about DIRT. What exactly is dirt? Students examined dirt from
Gleason…What did they discover? Grass, roots, seeds, ants, worms and of course CLAY! Students loved making their own edible dirt cups using Oreos, chocolate pudding mixture, and gummy worms. The final day ended by making a mosaic picture frame.

Thank you to Mrs. Sherri Brawner for doing an amazing job as our KIDS CLUB Director at Gleason School, as well as to Ms. Brooklyn McDowell for facilitating our final KIDS CLUB fun during teacher workdays as our teachers wrapped up the school year. Thank you also to Ella Roney, who is an upcoming Gleason 8th grader, for helping out with KIDS CLUB over the last two days.

Happy Summer!!! Now head on to the public library for some books to read this summer about flowers, dirt, and plants!🪴🌹

This week we said goodbye to two wonderful ladies who have dedicated many years of service to Gleason School. Mrs. Melissa Terrell taught Kindergarten at Gleason School for 20 years, 1 year in 1st grade, and the last 10 years as the Art Teacher, also serving other schools in Weakley County. Mrs. Amy Lawrence began her teaching career with 8 years as a Kindergarten teacher at McKenzie Elementary before being the Librarian at Gleason School for the last 24 years.

We would like to say congratulations to Mrs. Melissa and Mrs. Amy as they begin their retirement and next adventures! Mrs. Amy looks forward to seeing students in the fall as she will transition to working in Kids Club after school with Mrs. Sherri.
