On March 19th, 2026, Carter Cook, an employee of the City of Gleason and TAUD Apprenticeship participant, received the Duke Julian Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship provides $2,000 for Carter to use towards his apprenticeship related technical instruction. Carter was presented with the scholarship at the Gleason Water Plant by TAUD Apprenticeship Coordinator, Kevin Byrd with the Mayor of Gleason, Mr. Charles Anderson in attendance. Gleason, under the direction of Mayor Anderson, has been a tremendous supporter of and participant in TUAD’s Registered Apprenticeship and Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Programs. Gleason has had one employee complete the program, Clay Wright, who is now Gleason’s Water/Wastewater Superintendent. Carter will be the second apprentice to complete the program.
The Duke Julian Memorial Scholarship was proposed and funded by Mr. Mike Wetherington. Mike is an incredible supporter of TAUD and its programs. He funds TAUD scholarships and the development of a registered pre-apprenticeship in Lincoln County. Mike was a long-time friend and colleague of Duke Julian. He felt that this scholarship would continue a legacy of Duke’s impact on the water industry. Duke forged lasting relationships with individuals across Tennessee and other states. His support and promotion of the water industry greatly improved the communities that he served. Duke lived a life full of kindness, honor, and purpose, rich in experiences and relationships. He was an ardent fan and alumnus of the University of Alabama. His love for the Crimson Tide and golf was well-known among his family and friends. He proudly served his country as a United States Marine. It is with great honor that the TAUD Apprenticeship Program is part of this wonderful tribute.
